BERNICE WHITE (nee SOLTOWSKI) Bernice White, beloved mother to David (Linda), grandmother to Carl (Shawna) and great-grandmother to Logan and Vance, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at the age of 93. Her son and grandson were by her side. Bernice has been living at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for the past three years and had been in ill health for some time. She was predeceased by parents Kathryn (nee Payunk) and Nicholas Soltowski, her brother Stanley Hrychuk of Winnipeg, her sisters Stella Cornick (nee Hrychuk), Millie Kruetzman (nee Hrychuk) and Josie Noel (nee Soltowski) of Detroit, Michigan, and husband Gordon White, who passed away in 2001. Bernice (Jennie Soltowski) was born on July 26, 1923 the youngest of four sisters and an adored eldest brother. She was always a proud citizen of the North End of Winnipeg, even when not actually living there. Although ill health slowed her down in recent years, Bernice enjoyed being active. After David was in school, she returned to work at the Co-op Grocery Store on Henderson Highway and the Manitoba Sports Federation. Even after retirement, she loved riding her bike everywhere. Ice skating at Kildonan Park, swimming and line dancing were only some of the things she took pleasure in with Barbara, Beverley and many other friends. She especially liked having the opportunity to visit Winnipeg Beach where she and Gordon rented for many summers. Every summer Bernice planted marigolds, cosmos and other flowers as well as vegetables in her small garden, taking pride in never buying bedding plants and growing everything from seeds she gathered and saved from the year before. Like all children of the Depression, Bernice never spent money needlessly or wasted anything. Bernice was sociable with everyone and she knew all her neighbours, no matter where she lived. With friends Jenny and Jerry (always the cheerful chauffeur), she enjoyed visiting different churches for Sunday mass until she was no longer physically able to go. Bernice's family would like to thank Isaac, Pat, Cory and all the caring staff of the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg who were so kind to Bernice in her final years and who looked after her so well. A funeral service will take place at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford Street on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Private interment at St. Mary's Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined; however, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Bernice's name to a charity of your choice. We will miss her.
