JERRY DORFMAN 1923 - 2016 It is with sadness that the family of Jerry Dorfman announces his passing on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, one month into his 94th year. Jerry was born and raised in Winnipeg. He was the son of Sarah and Soloman Dorfman, and beloved big brother to Joyce. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, niece Esther Mollov and brother-in-law Norman Mollov. Jerry is survived by his nephew Benjamin Mollov and great-nephew Yaron Mollov (Israel) and his cousins, Carole Jeffries, Isabelle Book and their families. Jerry was an intelligent, thoughtful man who throughout his life demonstrated what it meant to be a "mensch" (good man). He was a devoted son, brother and uncle who cared deeply about family. He was quick to offer help to others and did so with quiet humility. Jerry spent his career as a well-respected high school English teacher. He worked primarily for the Winnipeg School Division. Jerry had high expectations of his students and cared about making a difference in their lives. Jerry was dedicated to his faith and was a life member at the Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue. Jerry was a politically minded man who was concerned about important social issues and demonstrated his support to a number of worthwhile causes. He was generous to a fault. Jerry spent his last years as a resident of The Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre, where some staff members affectionately referred to him as "professor". The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the wonderful team at The Simkin Centre who took very good care of this very good man. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. Cantor Gerry Daien officiated and spoke of the love and respect he had for his friend. Pallbearers were Mark Jeffries, Christopher Gregoire, Corey Gregoire, Marshall Kneller, Grant Zipursky and Murray Greenfield. Donations may be made to The Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre (1 Falcon Ridge Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3Y 1V9), The Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue (700 Jefferson Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2V 0P6) or to a charity of your choice.

This was many many years ago but to this day I still remember Mr. Dorfman reading us Wuthering Heights in Grade 10 English. I have never forgotten it. I still enjoy those types of novels and it was because of him. - Posted by: Jane Verwey (Student) on: Aug 14, 2024

My writing skills and love of reading is rooted in Mr. Dorfman's time in my life at Gordon Bell. English and French classes were my only joys in high school. To scan the Obituaries of these important teachers in my life brings a flood of memories. Glad to read about the rest of his life. - Posted by: Carmen Neumann (Student) on: Dec 13, 2022

Mr. Dorfman was a wonderful teacher and he taught me so much. I have passed this knowledge on to my own students! Thank you Mr. Dorfman. - Posted by: Colleen Evans (student) on: Apr 11, 2022
