GEORGE H. CASS
Born: Aug 10, 1930
Date of Passing: Sep 19, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE H. CASS August 10, 1930 - September 19, 2016 Peacefully, with his family by his side, George passed away at the Grace Hospital after complications from surgery. He was 86 years old. George was predeceased by his father, George, his mother, Anna, and his two sisters, Ruth and Enid. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Frances, his daughter Laurie and son-in-law David, his daughter Lesley, and his two beloved grandchildren, Amy (Alex) and Jordan (Alaina). George was born and raised in Hawkesbury, Ontario. He joined the R.C.M.P. at the age of 18 and began a career of which he was immensely proud. Early in his service, George was stationed in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, before moving on to Manitoba, where he met Fran, the love of his life. They were married in Winnipeg and began their family life together in Selkirk. While stationed in Selkirk, George received the prestigious Commissioner's Commendation for Bravery for the capture of burglar who had just robbed a bank. From there, George moved his family to Stonewall, Emerson, Brandon and Gimli. He retired from the R.C.M.P. in 1973, as Sergeant in charge of the Gimli detachment. George then joined Transport Canada in Winnipeg, where he supervised the installation of the airport security program within the Central region. After 21 years, George retired from Transport Canada as the Regional Director of Security. George was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and rose to the position of District Deputy Grand Master of the 8th Masonic District. He was also a life member of the R.C.M.P. Veterans' Association. George was a kind and gentle soul, with an endearing sense of humour, who would do anything for anybody. He loved his family with all his heart. He kept up many friendships with former R.C.M.P and Transport colleagues, and so enjoyed meeting them several times a week for coffee or at the Big A for breakfast. He enjoyed all sports, but hockey was his passion. He loved to skate on the ponds around Hawkesbury as a child and played hockey with the R.C.M.P. league for many years. His love of the game was passed on to his two daughters, and he was thrilled to attend many Moose games and the occasional Jets game with Lesley. George and Fran loved to travel and especially enjoyed their annual trips for the Vets AGM throughout Canada and the US. They also had many memorable trips to their time-share condo in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they would meet up with good friends Jock and Vi. George adored his two grandchildren and attended every choir performance, karate demonstration, dance recital and hockey game. He could not have been more proud watching Amy and Jordan grow up into young adults with successful careers and lives of their own. Finally, George was renowned for his sweet tooth, going so far as to ask about his jelly bean stash several times while he was in the hospital. Dad, we will forever think of you when there is a bowl of jelly beans around! The family would like to sincerely thank the staff on the 4th floor at the Grace Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of Dad during his short stay, and the R.C.M.P. Veterans' Association for all of their support. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Reverend Aubrey Hemminger for guiding us through this difficult time. To the many family members, colleagues and friends who called, visited, sent cards, and prayed for Dad, thank you so much for caring. It was a great comfort to Dad to know how much he was loved. In keeping with George's wishes, cremation has taken place and a service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Anglican Church Woodhaven, 2700 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the R.C.M.P Veterans' Association Manitoba Division Trust Fund (57 Manitou Bay, Winnipeg, MB R3K 0V5), or to St. Andrew's Anglican Church. Across the years I will walk with you - In deep green forests, on shores of sand; And when our time on earth is through, In heaven, too, you will have my hand. - Robert Sexton - For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. George, Fran, Laurie, and Lesley were our out the back door neighbours in Emerson for several years. The Cass family were part of our memories of our own growing up in Emerson. As neighbours and friends many events and every day non-events were shared. Fran's large pans of cabbage rolls when the weather turned colder in the fall and occasional disastrous fishing trips with George and our father, Cliff. Although our contact has diminished over time. the memories remain. Fran. Laurie and family and Lesley: George was an example of a "life well lived". My sympathies and regards to all of you. My Uncle George was a great man. A soft spoken person, always smiling, and ready with a joke. I will always remember him playing the "straight man" while my Dad jokingly poked at people. My uncle was always one step ahead of me, always grinning, always making me think that he knew something I didn't (which was usually right). From my earliest memory of him, I have always been proud to say he was my Uncle. An excellent role model. A kind, gentle person, loving family man and husband, I was so proud to have him attend my graduation from the RCMP Training Academy in 1994. The memory of him and my Dad in their red blazers has always made me smile. To my Aunti Fran, Lori and Lesley, I am so sorry. Uncle George was a great person. Chris PALLISTER, S/Sgt. We were saddened to hear today of George's passing. Our prayers and deepest sympathies to Fran, Laurie, Lesley and families. Although I never met George I have known him all my life. There has been a strong connection in the Cass family. My Grandma, Leila (Cass) Graham would always pass on the news of George Sr's family - George, Ruth and Enid. The Cass family have always been good letter writers. Later my Uncle Ken would pass on George and Fran's news every Christmas. And finally my Dad Glenn Graham would tell me how the Winnipeg Cass' we're doing. From the Vulcan Cass/Graham family we feel your loss. Hugs and prayers go out to you all. On behalf of Bonny and myself, our heartfelt condolences are extended to Fran, Laurie, Lesley and the whole family. I have so many fond memories of times spent with George and the Cass family back in the Emerson days in the 60's and beyond. Our family had the good fortune of being neighbours with the Cass's and both families became good, close and lasting friends. I've always had great admiration for George as being a man of strong integrity and a wonderful husband, father and role model. George certainly had a very good, full life and his legacy will continue for generations. Cherish the memories and hold them dear. Time will help to ease your sorrow and George will always hold a special place in all your hearts. Take good care everyone and stay well. - Posted by: Ron Whitwell (friend of the family) on: Sep 24, 2016
