BARBARA MICHALCHAN It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Barbara Michalchan. Mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, on September 25, 2016 at the Grace General Hospital. Barb was born in Winnipeg September 19, 1931 to Malcom Payne Biggs and Catherine Campbell Craig. Her formative years were spent in Winnipeg and Regina, finally arriving in North Vancouver where she graduated high school. Barb always wanted to nurse and graduated in 1952 from St. Josef's School of Nursing in Victoria, BC. Her nursing career extended into the RCAF tending to soldiers wounded. It was in 1956 while working in Comox, BC, she met a handsome young Air Force officer, Peter Michalchan, they married February 23, 1957. In January 1958, daughter Catherine arrived, followed in 1965 by William James. Being in the Air Force required a lot of moves to different Air Force bases across Canada. Finally settling in Winnipeg in 1969. It was time to go back into the workforce and in 1970 started at Tuxedo Villa, there she remained until retiring in 1992. Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Malcom and Catherine; brother Douglas; and her beloved husband Peter. Survived by her daughter Catherine (Jerry); son Jamie (Brenlee); granddaughters, Tanya, Tamara, Talya and Jenna; and great-grandson Taylan, who lifted her heart and made her smile. Also surviving is her very dear nephew Mike Biggs, from Sherwood Park, AB, along with his wife Debbie, daughter Michelle and son Dan. Mom was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer in January 2016. She wanted to "give chemo a try". Through all the highs, lows, not feeling well, the family supported her decision. Sadly, the cancer conquered and Mom passed away this past Sunday evening, shortly after reaching her 85th birthday. The family wishes to thank Dr. Christine Robinson and Dr. Erin Dean from CCMB. All the oncology nurses, the volunteers, and finally the nursing staff and HCA's at the Grace Hospital 5 North. Mom was treated with respect and dignity. We will miss you. Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue with interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715
