JOHANNA ANTONIA SAIN (WYENBERG) May 27, 1927 - October 3, 2016 On October 3, 2016, Johanna passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 89, after a short battle with breast cancer. Johanna is survived by Rudy, her husband of 69 years, and their four sons, Guy (Peggy Kasuba) of Beausejour, John of St. Andrews, Mitchell (Mina Wallace) of Toronto and David (Lori) of Winnipeg. She also leaves nine cherished grandchildren: Tracy Sain (Doug Vanderelst), Kim Jones (Derek), Treena Bilous (Jason), Kelly Sain (Krista), Tamara Zastre (Brett), Andrew and Hilary Sain, Paige and Madison Sain, and nine beloved great-grandchildren: Kyle Vanderelst, Savannah and Sierra Jones, Sarah and Ryan Bilous, Brayden and Rylee Sain and Emily and Alyssa Zastre. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Hammond (Bob) of Vancouver, her brother, Doug of Calgary, her lifelong friend, Liz Woodiwiss and their families. Johanna was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Bertha Wyenberg, her brothers, Jack and Tony, her sister, Barbara Kriebel, and her daughter-in-law, Wendy Sain. Johanna was born in East Kildonan and lived there her entire life. She met Rudy Sain in high school. They were married on September 27, 1947 and were seldom apart until she entered Riverview in late August 2016. They spent many decades at Grand Beach, beginning with train rides on the Moonlight Special to the Dance Pavilion on the Boardwalk. They built a cottage there and many of their happiest memories are from the countless summers they spent at the Beach with their family. Johanna loved reading, including the Globe and Mail and the Sunday New York Times, and was interested in the news, often having the radio and television news on at the same time. Johanna was an enthusiastic volunteer for many sporting events over the years, including the Pan Am Games in 1999, World Curling, World Figure Skating, World Women's Hockey and the 1998 Grey Cup (where she was on the security detail, in her 70s). She also volunteered in the children's reading program at a local elementary school and was on various committees with John Black United Church. She and Rudy were honoured for their long membership as part of John Black's 100th anniversary celebrations in 2014. Johanna had an outgoing personality. She loved to talk, had a quick wit and a great sense of humour. She loved knitting afghans, playing bingo and double dominoes, the Goldeyes, the Manitoba Moose and the Winnipeg Jets. Johanna's life revolved around her family, above all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted Grandma and Gran-Mama and was a frequent cheerleader at their many activities. She loved to entertain and her soups and coleslaw are legendary. The family thanks the Home Care and Palliative Care Programs, whose support enabled Johanna and Rudy to live independently in their home. Thanks also to Jo's health care providers, particularly the caring and compassionate staff at Riverview 3E. Special thanks to Michelle and Holly from Munroe Pharmacy for their tremendous support. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Johanna's life will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at John Black Memorial United Church, 898 Henderson Highway at 11:00 a.m.
