WALTER SYROTIUK Peacefully on October 14, 2016 Walter Syrotiuk, aged 102 years of Gypsumville, MB, passed away at the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital in Eriksdale, MB. Walter was predeceased by his wife Pauline, his parents Micheal and Franciska, sister Olga, brother Alec and brother Nestor, daughter-in-law Gloria Lund, and sister-in-law Violet Syrotiuk. He is survived by his stepsons Christopher John Lund (Dianne) and Richard Allen Lund (Cindy), sister Josephine (Jesse), and brother Eugene along with numerous nieces and nephews. On October 3, Walter recently celebrated his 102nd birthday surrounded by his close family and friends in the Ashern Hospital. Blowing his candles out with ease, everyone was reminded for one last time how he truly enjoyed his birthday parties. Walter had the distinct honour and experience of becoming a centenarian with even a couple years on top unlike most people. Growing up Walter was the oldest child of Micheal and Franciska. In his early years, Walter attended school at Van Dusen while he worked on the family farm alongside his siblings. He later diversified his career and began commercial fishing on Lake Manitoba using a "dog sled" and "horse sleigh" as well as trapping mink and muskrat to help prosper during the 'hard times'. Walter later worked as a fish buyer for Pete Lazarenko in Molsen Lake. Walter struck out on his own after meeting his wife Pauline Lund in the 1960s where they worked their own grain farm and ranch. Walter developed a great passion for grain farming while Pauline loved the cattle. There were many discussions over the kitchen table over which was better. He also was an avid hunter who was well known for being a marksman and took great pride in sharing his numerous hunting stories with others. Time was never an issue for Walter who never wore a watch. If a job took one day or four days to complete, it simply didn't matter to him. When asked by many people what his secret to a long life was, his answer was "moose meat and potatoes". The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern for the care Walter received. A special thank you goes out to all the home care workers that looked after Walter over the years. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2016 in the Gypsumville Community Hall with Pastor Mark Just officiating. Interment will be held in the Gypsumville Cemetery. Lunch will follow in the hall. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the hall. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Kevin Lund, Todd Lund, Mitchell Lund, Richard Lund, Andrew Lund and Jason Fox. Arrangements by: ARNASON FUNERAL HOME Ashern - Lundar 1-204-768-2072 1-866-323-3593
