SAM STERN It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sam Stern following a brief illness on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. He was 91 years of age. Left behind to mourn his loss is his loving wife of 52 years, Annette; son David; sisters, Becky Rosenberg, Sally (Chaim) Ben-Ezra; sister-in-law Terry Albi; brother-in-law Murray (Cathy) Morello. Dad was born in Winnipeg where he achieved several university degrees. He worked as a social worker in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba working in the field of adoption. Sam was a dedicated professional person who won the respect and appreciation of many clients and associates. Over the years, he received cards and letters with updates on how his young placements were doing. Dad was a very private and caring person. He was a loving, responsible husband and father dedicated to the well-being of his family. After retiring in 1990, he was generous with his time. Before entering Deer Lodge he would make weekly visits to his sisters to take them shopping, banking or just to spend time together talking about the old days on Dufferin and College Avenue. He also enjoyed volunteering his time at the museum at the Asper Centre and delivering Meals on Wheels. Sam was a resident of Deer Lodge Centre - Tower 5 for the last 14 years. He took pride in going to physiotherapy in order to build up his strength following catastrophic spinal cord surgery in 2001. Eventually Sam was able to feed himself, use his wheelchair and walker independently. Thank you to the tower 5 staff for all the care, support and love you showed Sam. Words alone cannot express our gratitude. A graveside service took place on Sunday, October 9 at the Rosh Pina Memorial Park with Rabbi Larry Lander officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, The Canadian Museum for Human Rights or to a charity of your choice. Think only this of me - love, pride and dignity. Don't weep for me, but wish me well on this final voyage.

It has been almost a year since you passed away on October 6, 2016. The family will miss your visits at home, and times together at restaurants, and at Hanukkah etc. Shoshana always looked forward to our visits at Deer Lodge over the years. With love from Shoshana, Carmi, Jeriel, Silvan and the Stern family. - Posted by: D. Eliezer Stern (family) on: Sep 22, 2017

I was so sorry to see "Sam" in the Saturday paper. Even though I haven't seen Sam for many, many years, something I deeply regret, I remember him and his voice like it was yesterday. I remember him to be an eloquent speaker with great animation and passion while he spoke. The world is a lesser place without him. I am so sorry, Annette and David, for your loss. Remember him, always. Ken - Posted by: Ken Loschiavo (Friend) on: Oct 27, 2016

I visited Sam many years ago when my mother Hilda Stern was a patient at Deer Lodge. I found him to be a very interesting gentleman with a deep love and regard for his family. He was my Dad's cousin Sid Stern and the Stern family was very close. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and I wish his family my deepest condolences. - Posted by: Ricki Segal (nee Stern) (cousin) on: Oct 23, 2016
