JOANNE MADAMS Peacefully, at home on October 17, 2016 Joanne Elizabeth Madams, age 63, passed away at home surrounded by family and friends after a lengthy battle with cancer. Joanne was predeceased by her mother Betty Downie and father Joseph Downie. She is survived by her husband Bob, son Scott (Devon), daughter Lee-Anne and Buddy the family golden retriever. She is also survived by her brothers David Downie and Doug (Peggy) Downie. Joanne was born at the Grace Hospital on September 21, 1953. It was here she first met her future husband Bob who was also born at the Grace Hospital three days later. Although they were apart for 16 years they were reunited in grade 11 at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and were married for 42 years. Joanne lived in the west end on Strathcona Street for many years. After graduating from grade 12 she went on the University of Manitoba and obtained a degree from the faculty of Arts. During her time at the University she joined the Pi Beta Phi Sorority where she met many wonderful friends. Joanne was still active in the sorority at the time of her passing. Between raising two children she worked at Sears Kildonan Place in the shoe department for many years before retiring in 2013. Joanne volunteered as Secretary for Park City Community Club for many years after the Community Center first opened up. Joanne was a loving wife and a wonderful person who will be missed by her many friends and family. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at CancerCare in St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and compassion. Joanne also asked that the members of the palliative care team be thanked, from the home care people to the nurses and doctors that showed they really cared about her as a person. Joanne had a soft spot in her heart for animals, and always had a dog in her home. First she had Whiskers, then Sam, Prince, Rusty and Buddy. She also had a special spot for Peanut, her son Scott's dog who adored her. Should friends desire, donations may be made in Joanne's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T OR3. A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.

Bob, Scott & Lee-Anne, I just heard of Joanne's passing and I wanted to express sincere condolences on behalf of Petra and myself. Although I haven't seen Joanne in some time I always remember how friendly she was and how welcoming she was when ever I stopped in. So very sorry to hear of your loss. My most sincere sympathies to Joanne's family. For many years Joanne was the "Queen of the Shoe department" at Sears Kildonan Place. We shared many laughs together as she dealt with the stock issues of "too many crocs" and never enough "decent winter boots". Joanne was a very dedicated employee who often went above and beyond to help out her customers. May happy memories help to sustain you as you mourn the loss of this special woman. - Posted by: Bruce Meisner (past co-worker) on: Oct 24, 2016

Thanks to Joanne who was so kind to me in high school. I went to Tec Voc and she was going to Daniel Mac. She lived a few houses from me on Strathcona. She was kind hearted and a wonderful friend. Over the years I have thought of her when I have been in the West End, wondering where she was. She would lend me her red knit dress sometimes, and I just loved it. I have wonderful memories of her. Thanks Joanne you are now an angel. Big hugs. - Posted by: Susan Gulenchyn (Wilma Melnichuk) (high school friend and neighbor) on: Oct 23, 2016
