FREDERICK FARMERY Peacefully, on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, Frederick Farmery passed away surrounded by his family. Born in 1920, Fred was 96 years of age and lived his life to the fullest. He was predeceased by his first wife, Grace Marie, and his second wife, Leota Margarete. He will be sadly missed by his daughters, Rene (Bill), Sandy (Paul), Kathleen (Mark) and his special friend, Jean Hess. Also mourning his loss are grandchildren, Chelsea (Dan), Alison (Brent), Gary, Michelle and great-granddaughter Lirael. Fred grew up in Winnipeg and never had a desire to leave, even though he was well travelled. He lived through the Depression and from that experience he became a true environmentalist. Growing up, he delivered drugs and groceries on his bicycle. He served in the Air Force during the Second World War in reconnaissance. He began his career with Air Canada, where he was mechanic, inspector, and then in quality control. He retired in 1974, but continued to use his vast knowledge of anything mechanical to repair, create and assist others. The family relied on him to consult and coach on any projects or major decisions. Fred was appalled to have to pay two dollars for a part worth only a few cents. He would spend days constructing one of his own made from found materials instead. The family will miss his incredible intelligence and resourcefulness. Fred enjoyed summers from 1959 until the present on Woodchuck Bay in Lake of the Woods and spent his winters after he retired in St. Vincent, Scottsdale, Arizona, and then Florida. He also travelled many places throughout the world. Up until three weeks ago, Fred was living in his own home, mowing his lawn, playing golf and Bridge, and driving his car. He was also very well read and had opinions on a vast array of subjects. He had a wonderful sense of humour and had his health care workers chuckling right until the end. He was fiercely independent and continued to manage all his affairs. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to CancerCare or a charity of their choice. Cremation has taken place. As per Fred's wishes, the family will hold a private celebration in his honour.

  • As my next door neighbour I met Fred pretty much day one when I moved into my home back in 1992. Over the years I enjoyed the many conversations we had in our driveways which covered topics such as the weather, why my lawn was greener, what he was building in his garage and how to best tackle his ant problem. I also marvelled in how much Fred took on around his home. He truly loved being in his yard or in his garage tinkering, building or inventing. You will be missed Fred. My sincere condolences to the entire family. - Posted by: Colin (Neighbour) on: Oct 27, 2016

  • Saddened to learn of the death of my mother's 2nd cousin but a long life well lived. I never met Fred but we did make contact may years ago when I first started tracing the Canadian branch of my FARMERY family tree. Fred was the grandson of William FARMERY born 1861 in North Kelsey, Lincolnshire son of George and Charlotte (GRIMES) FARMERY. William's sister Jane FARMERY born 1863 in Swallow, near Grimsby, Lincolnshire was my great grandmother. My condolences to all the family. • Rene, Sandra and Kathleen so sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. Living across the street from your family, as a child, I remember your Mom and Dad very well. Your Mom was also so welcoming to us kids in the neighbourhood and your Dad was always willing to lend a hand to anyone that needed one. I was fortunate to own one of your Dad's cars. The 69 Rambler I bought from your Dad was spotless and so well maintained. He always was checking with me that it was running well. He was such a nice and friendly man who I remember fondly. Treasure the memories the many years of memories you have of him. - Posted by: Vicki McLarty (Ruston) (Old neighbour) on: Oct 26, 2016
