In keeping with Walter's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. WALTER ARTHUR NICKEL March 21, 1933 - October 21, 2016 Walter Arthur Nickel, beloved husband of Lorette, after a courageous battle with cancer and with the love of his family around him, it is with heavy hearts the family announces his passing on Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 83 years. Walter leaves to cherish his memory his wife of six years Lorette, his son-in-law Gordon Trites, husband of the late daughter Sharon Trites, their children and grandchildren of Walter, Tasmin (Sarfo)Trites-Darko, great-grandchildren Malau, Elli, Zion as well as granddaughter Deanna (Cole) Imler; daughter Gerry (Mike) Beaulieu, grandchildren Kyle and Codey; son Ron (Lucy) Nickel, grandchild Breanna; stepchildren Debbie (Bill) Mukanik, grandchildren Blair and Laurel, Cheryl (Gerry) Saurette, grandchild Lisa; Bill (Karen) Fisher, Greg (Helen) Fisher, grandchild Karolina; Ralph Fisher; his brothers George (Lorraine) Nickel, Elmer (Linda) Nickel, Lloyd (Judy) Nickel; his sister-in-law Ann (Frank) Bednar; as well as his nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. Walter was predeceased by his wife Mary Nickel, his daughter Sharon Trites, his grandson Brandon Henry Beaulieu at birth, his parents Henry and Emma Nickel; brother Edward Nickel and spouse Maureen Nickel and sister-in-law Lynda Nickel. Walter was born in Moosehorn, Manitoba on the family farm and moved to Winnipeg as young man. He married Mary Nickel (nee Jaman) in 1956 and they were married for 46 years until she passed away in 2002. He worked as a butcher for 33 years at numerous meat packing plants and was also a handyman. Walter married Lorette Fisher-Nickel on July 24, 2010. Walter enjoyed spending time with his family during holidays and gatherings. He also enjoyed travelling and spending time at the cottage in Kenora. He was always prompt for all occasions and had to wash his car at 6:00 a.m. In keeping with Walters wishes, a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. The family would like to thank the Riverview Health Centre, doctors, nurses and staff for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Walters memory to the Riverview Health Centre.
