ISABEL DOWBIGGIN 1928 - 2016 Following a brief illness, and with the loving support of family and devoted friends, Isabel packed her suitcase and left on her next adventure. Isabel had a stubbornness that was, at times, a frustration for her family, but carried her through many tough spots in life. She had a dedication to that which mattered most to her, witnessed in her love of family, including many people she adopted and accepted as family. Broad based in her viewpoints, vociferous in her defense of said viewpoints, like a terrier in fighting for the rights of those under her perview, adventuresome to the highest degree and, as one friend said, "she was the one in the room who was listening to everyone" and "was soft spoken but had a loud voice" define Isabel throughout her whole life. As a child she lamented having to wear glasses, which meant no playing outside at recess; she was a 'special child'. She captained the debating team in University, which is where she met the love of her life, Elliott. She was hired on at Winnipeg One School Division, where she successfully taught English and Latin to grade 7 students, taught at Marymound School for Girls for a number of years, went on to become Principal of Special Needs Schools. She served on several boards, volunteering because it was her passion to create a better world. She and Elliott travelled the world, making sure each trip was a learning experience, meeting all kinds of new people and embracing every new culture. She and Elliott are now tripping the life fantastic together again. Isabel is survived by her children Paula (George) and Bob (Sally), grandchildren Justin (Megan) and Sarah (Adam), Alex and Sean, Megan and Robyn, and five great-grandchildren. She joins those who have gone before her, her loving Elliott, daughter Lauranne, sister Sarah Elizabeth, Mom and Dad Laura and Percy, and brothers Dick and Don. The family would like to give a special thank you to Marianne and Gerri for their loving care for the past many years, as well as the staff at the Grace Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2016 at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB.
