JOYCE ELIZABETH GOEKE (nee HALLADAY) With her family at her side, Joyce passed away peacefully on November 6, 2016. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Patricia Baker (Chandran); son Fredrick Goeke (Layna Penner); grandchildren Kirsten, Aidan, Signe, Jeremy, Lara, and Amelia; sisters Francis Main and Eileen Hulley; and brother Hubert Halladay. Joyce was predeceased by her husband Horst Peter, mother Ethel Armstrong, father William Halladay, and sister Margaret Wright. Joyce was born in Baring, Saskatchewan on October 16, 1930. She grew up helping in the family store and on the farm. After high school, she attended Portage General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1952 as a Registered Nurse. She had an adventurous spirit, and travelled to London, England in 1953, where she studied midwifery and worked as a nurse. Shortly after returning to Canada, she met Peter. They were married in 1958 and then moved to Teulon, where they farmed and started a family construction business. They raised their family in Teulon and were active in the community. Joyce was a dedicated and respected nurse at Hunter Memorial Hospital from 1958 until her retirement in 1992. She was an incredibly energetic person with many interests. She was an avid gardener, canner, berry picker, knitter, quilter and poet. Peter and Joyce enjoyed travelling, and visited China, Mexico, the Caribbean, and many countries in Europe. When Peter's health failed, she was a devoted caregiver to him for many years. The other love of her life was her grandchildren. She doted on them when they were young, and attended all of their school concerts, music recitals, and sporting events. As they became older, Joyce travelled with them individually on special trips that she carefully planned. In 2009, Joyce was diagnosed with cancer. As always, she maintained a positive attitude despite the diagnosis and through her treatments. Fortunately, there were long periods of remission and she continued to live life fully. The family would like to thank those who cared for Joyce in her brave battle with cancer, including Dr. E. Dean; the staff at CancerCare and Women's Hospital; her dear friends Val and Bill; home care in Teulon; Comfort Keepers staff and many others. A celebration of Joyce's life will be held at Gunton Greenwood Community Hall at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2016 in Gunton, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
