GERIE METCALFE Our son, father, brother, uncle and friend Gerie left us on October 18, 2016 at his home in White Rock, BC. He was predeceased by his father George and his Aunt Myrtle. His passing is a tremendous loss for those who loved him; his mother Jeannette; his daughter Camille (Geoff); his son Alexander London; his siblings and their families Geoff (Leah and Matthew), Robin (Kary, Jenna, Danielle), Alix (Joshua, Mariah), Bryan (David, Andrew) and Laura (Sam). Gerie made his home in White Rock almost 35 years ago but maintained his connection to Winnipeg where he grew up, finished high school and attended the Fine Arts Program at University of Manitoba. Gerie had a creative mind and spirit which he expressed through his drawings, paintings, writings and poetry. He had an insatiable curiosity and a desire to truly understand life and the world around him. This often led to inspired and lengthy conversations with family, friends and anyone he came in contact with. He left an impression on everyone he met, whether it was by making them think or laugh. He was open to all ideas and beliefs and maintained his faith as a Christian. He inherited his mother's and father's love of reading and usually had a book in front of him, frequently reading late into the night. Gerie approached life with joy and a positive attitude which was infectious, brightening everyone's day when he was around. He remained forever young at heart with an affinity for young people, especially his children, nieces and nephews. Our lives are richer for all that he gave us and so we feel his loss deeply. Gerie's memorial service will be on Saturday, November 26 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Andrews Anglican Church 2700 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. "If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn, They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem".

After spending time or having a conversation with Gerrie, I got a surprising new fresh look at life with the help of Gerrie's unique twists and turn logic. How did he do that? We first met in Amsterdam in the mid seventies. He needed a ride to Paris with my bus service. I ran into him again in Paris, when he needed to go back to Amsterdam. He was very much interested in this young British girl, at the time. In fact, he was talking my ear off about her. He eventually stayed some time at my place in Amsterdam, while I was away and a few months later, I was asked to keep track of the ring at their wedding. Since those days it has always been my pleasure to find some time to visit through the years, to see Gerrie and Kim, catch a quick episode of Alex and Camille growing up. Each time making me wish I wasn't always half a continent away. Gerrie and I used to have hour long conversations, every other month. We talked about writing, projects, family, news... He was a great friend. One of the best. I am sorry for the loss of a father, son, brother and friend to his family and friends. We were all expecting this, Hockey, Artist, Great Thinker dynamo guy to be bouncing around for several more decades. - Posted by: Samson (James Shuster) (Friend) on: Nov 26, 2016

It has been many decades since i last saw Gerie but his passing brought back many memories. I lived down the street on Ainslie from the Metcalfes. Gerie and I and other friends spent many hours playing hockey at the Sturgeon Creek Community Club and at the U of Manitoba on intra mural teams as well as car pooling to University. It was always an adventure when Gerie drove. Gerry was a free spirit. I remember his love for athletics and art. He was a true inspiration when it came to his natural artistic abilities. He was always curious to the point I still remember his touching the goal post at the local rink when it was about -20. He was curious whether is tongue would actually stick. It did!. I pass on my deepest condolences to all the Metcalfes and family on his passing. Doug Reid - Posted by: Doug Reid (Friend) on: Nov 24, 2016
