The first time I met Auntie Jean, I knew I had met a kindred spirit. As fellow nurses, we talked about the differences between nursing in her generation and mine. She was definitely the matriarch, and I loved her strong opinions an moral compass. She also had a great sense of humour. When we stayed wth her and Uncle Jimmy when Doug's father passed away, we were sitting in her living room on a freezing cold Winnipeg night. I was still cold from the ride through the record cold from Calgary. She looked at Uncle Jimmy and said in a commanding tone, "Jimmy! Give Anne your lap quilt". He handed it over, saying not a word. I said, " But Auntie Jean, Uncle Jimmie needs it". "No he doesn't he just won it in a raffle and I want you to keep it, we have lots of other throws around here". There was no point arguing with that tone of voice. Today, that same lap quilt still sits on my maple rocker, in my place in the BC mountains as a memory of Auntie Jean, and how she tucked me under her wing. I will always love her.
