MARY SHIRLEY DAVIES (née LEWIS) Shirley's long and eventful life ended suddenly on November 14, 2016. She was born in Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales and treasured the memory of sea and mountains all her life. She learned to read early and never stopped. At the age of 19 she married Derwyn Davies and they lived firstly in the English Black Country and then in the Cotswolds. During this period arrived Michael, Dylan, Huw, Rhiannon, Gwyn, Dan, and Mari. In 1966 they and these seven travelled by boat and train to Manitoba. A house on the banks of the Red River was home for many years. Family was hugely important to Shirley, and as the children grew she embarked on a teaching career. Beginning as an aide, she took courses, qualified and taught in a number of Seven Oaks schools, ending as Principal of a French Immersion school. Retirement was enjoyed in the delights of reading (of course), visiting the children and soon 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She died as she wished, quickly and in the midst of family. The family, literature, politics and cashmere sweaters enriched and fulfilled her long life.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Shirley was the first Vice-Principal of my teaching career. She had a huge influence on me. She guided me through my first years of teaching. She spoke honestly and convincingly about teaching. What she taught me remains true to this day. My sincere condolences to her family. - Posted by: Eda Korchynski (mentor and friend) on: Nov 30, 2016
