Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD RICHARD ONOFRIECHUK We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Donald Onofriechuk at his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Monday, November 14, 2016. Don was a dedicated member of the Winnipeg community, known for his generosity and kindness. Despite living his life with a rare form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease which meant facing many challenges of everyday living, he played the hand of cards he was dealt, helping everyone to better understand acceptance, patience, courage, perseverance, inclusivity and so many other things in life. When asked "How is it going?", his reply was " Every day I am here is a good day!" Born in Roblin, Manitoba on October 22, 1954, Don began his training in accounting at a very early age as bookkeeper in his parent's construction business. Don completed high school in 1972 and went on to formally study accounting and financial planning becoming a member of the Society of Management Accountants of Manitoba for more than 30 years and a Certified Financial Planner. Don's love of numbers meant he could complete the Sudoku puzzles in the Globe and Mail with his morning cup of coffee faster than it would take most people to crawl out of bed. Always a loyal fan of the Winnipeg sports teams, Don would plan long road trips which included attending a game of football or hockey. Don worked with the Federal Service Government of Canada and retired as a Sr. Finance Officer in 1998 but continued to share his knowledge and expertise becoming the go to person for many who sought expert advice on matters of accounting and financial planning. Upon moving to Winnipeg in 1981, Don became a longtime member of the board of directors for 1010 Sinclair Housing Inc., a not for profit organization whose goal is to make available housing and services to individuals living with disabilities. Don also served on the board of directors for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and as a volunteer at his church. Don will be forever in our hearts and greatly missed by his wife Maritess, mother Ella, sister Elizabeth Ney (Scott), niece and nephew Mikaela and Coleman Ney. Don also leaves his extended family Roger and Tessie Botor, sisters-in-law Marichris Gray (Lou) and Rotesa, and brother-in-law Ramon (Miles). Don will also be mourned by aunts, uncles, cousins and many long lasting friendships. He was predeceased by his father Andrew and sister Carol. Don will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor and unassuming small - town charm. Family and friends will gather at a visitation on Sunday, November 27 (1:00 to 3:00 p.m.) at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 28 (2:00 p.m.) at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 1541 St. Mary's Road, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winnipeg Harvest, a non-profit, community based organization that is a food distribution and training Centre, 1010 Sinclair Housing Inc. which supports housing and services to individuals living with disabilities, the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities or any charitable organization of your choice. Thanks to my sister Marion, I have received this notice. I have memories of Don from a long time ago. My twin brother Ron and I used to come to visit and play with him after church at Bethany Lutheran in Inglis, Manitoba. We were less than 7 years old at the time and lost contact when we moved to Winnipeg in 1963. I never forgot about him and often wondered about where his life went - I see it was full and rich. God bless you all. I'm thankful to read about Don's life. - Posted by: Don Zimmer (Childhood friend) on: Nov 27, 2016
