ORA ELMAYE HLADY On Thursday, December 8, 2016 Ora's Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 600 Cambridge Street, with Pastor Rick Sauer presider. ORA ELMAYE HLADY (nee GIGSTAD) Valiantly, on Friday, December 2, 2016, at St. Boniface General Hospital, our mother, Ora, age 92, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has gone to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Left to survive Ora are her children: Jeanne (John), Mark, Greg, Valerie, Charles (Shigeko), Chris and Steve; siblings Harold (Karen) and Janet; sisters-in-law Marla, Gayle, and Vonnie; grandchildren: Michael (Andrea), Matthew, Andrew, Melanie, Jared, Willow (Sean), Daniel, William, Jeongeel, Chie, Youngnam, and Yuuki; great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Brigitte, Nate, Aadyn, Rory, Stephanie, Jessica, Hillary, Katherine, Celeste, Alia, Miller, Griffin and Crosby; and great-great grandson: Levi. She will be dearly missed by extended family and the many lives she touched. She was predeceased by her husband Walter; son Douglas (and his special friend Judy); siblings: Eleanor (Jim) and Edwin; parents: Oscar and Lucile; beloved family and friends. Ora was born in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota in 1924, growing up during the Great Depression. She served in World War II with the Air Women's Army Corps. She received a Journalism degree at The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where she met Walter. They were married in Springfield, Oregon in 1950, and settled in Winnipeg. A devout Lutheran, Ora was passionate about human rights, and supported many charities and causes, including Our Saviour's, and more recently, St. Mark's Lutheran Church. In the 1990s she was humbled to be awarded a Lifetime Membership in the Manitoba Liberal Party. Ora, an avid genealogist, celebrated her roots going back to Valdres, Norway and beyond. She had a keen mind; open to new ideas and old (i.e. Science and Archaeology). She enjoyed her membership at the University of Manitoba's Classics Club. On Thursday, December 8, 2016 Ora's Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 600 Cambridge Street, with Pastor Rick Sauer presider. For those who wish, viewing will be held at 10:00 am. Reception will follow in the Church Hall. Final Interment will be at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Karasevich, Jared, Andrew and Youngnam Hlady. Pallbearers will be Michael and Matthew Saj, Daniel and William Saul, and Charles and Chris Hlady. The family would like to thank her physician, Dr. B. Shah; also, the staff of St. Boniface General Hospital's E.R. and Cardiology Unit, for their outstanding care. Thank you to the Reh-Fit Centre for helping to keep her healthy and strong for many years. Flowers are respectfully declined, but donations in her name may be made to a charity of your choice.
