RICHARD WASHNUK (WASH) Rick passed peacefully with the love of his life at his side on the morning of December 10, 2016. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 37 years, Susan; sons, Mike (Kristin), Dan (Josée); his beloved mother Marion; his 'sis' Verna (Laurie); brother-in-law Gerry (Linda); sister-in-law Sandy; numerous family members and close friends. Born and raised in Elmwood the only child of Mike and Marion, Rick developed many special life long friendships. He attended George V and Elmwood High School playing for the Elmwood Eskimos. Rick went onto University where he 'majored in football' for the U of M Bisons. After having had a 'cup of coffee' with the Bombers, Rick left University to pursue a career in the glass industry that spanned over 30 years. Starting at Border Glass then onto CCP (division of Willmar Windows) Rick eventually opened up his own Manufacturers Agency, RMW Enterprises. Through hard work he was successful and respected in his field. His passion for sports began early on playing community club hockey, baseball and lacrosse. Sports had always remained an essential part of life for Rick. Whether he golfed, curled, fished, or hunted, or whether he played, coached or armchair quarterbacked, he was always involved in some way. Rick devoted many years coaching football with the Daniel McIntyre Maroons and East Side Eagles. He was proud to have coached his sons in baseball, hockey and football. Though MS took his ability to walk, his mind remained as sharp and active as ever. Never one to shy away from a discussion on anything sports related or political, Rick's advice on any subject was sought out by many and his intelligence and candor were valued and enjoyed by all who knew him. Rick's appreciation for good conversation increased in these last few years and it is the time that was spent with his family and friends that added the quality to his life. The family wishes to thank all those who journeyed with Rick. Cremation has taken place. Honorary pallbearers, Dwight, Rod, Randy, Terry, George, Leo, Verna and Kathy. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to a charity of one's choice. A gathering to celebrate and remember Rick's life will take place on Wednesday, December 14, Holy Eucharist Hall 460 Munroe Avenue at 7:00 p.m. Vince Lombardi said "I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." Victorious is how we will remember you. Online condolences www.mosaicfunerals.ca

  • I am saddened to hear of Rick's passing. My sympathies to the family. One memory that comes back to me is playing pick up hockey at King Edward Park in the 1960's with Wash and lots of other kids from the neighbour hood. Sometimes Wash would wear a Detroit Red Wings sweater that Terry Sawchuk had given to him. Wash was a tough competitor in sports, even in those pickup games. On the football team Wash set the example for the rest of us to follow. He always encouraged the rest of us to do our best. To the family, hold on to your memories of the good times and to each other. Rest in Peace Wash. - Posted by: Aubrey Settee (Friend and Teammate on the Elmwood Eskimos) on: Dec 13, 2016

  • I was the goaltender for the hockey team that Mr. Washnuk coached during the mid 1990's. I played along side his oldest son, Mike. Mr. Washnuk was an exceptional coach who inspired his players to exceed their natural abilities. His ability to honestly reward or challenge his players are life lessons that have stuck with me throughout the years and have greatly benefited me in various aspects of my life. It was a privilege and honor to play for him and to learn from him. - Posted by: Chad McDougall (Played hockey for Mr. Washnuk) on: Dec 12, 2016
