DAVID HALPERN August 6, 1926 - December 7, 2016 Born in Zaleshtiki, Poland to Bertha and Chaim Halpern. He travelled to Canada as an infant and grew up in Winnipeg where he graduated as a Chartered Accountant He then moved to Edmonton, where he became the first Jewish Chartered Accountant in the Province of Alberta, and one of the first 10 Jewish Chartered Accountants in Western Canada. In 1953 David met the love of his life Tibele (nee Newman) and they started their family. They had many close friends and associates in the Edmonton community. In 1963 the family moved to Calgary and David took up a partnership in the Sheraton Summit Hotel which carried on for many successful years. Eventually, David continued on in the Calgary business community and was very successful in commercial real estate. David was active in the Edmonton and then Calgary Jewish communities, with the Shaarey Tzedec synagogue, the Calgary Hebrew School, JNF (Chairman), and B'nai Brith. He continued, up to this day to be a supporting member of countless organizations within the Jewish and greater Calgary community. Family was most important in his life always. David was predeceased by his brother Izzy, and his wife Tibele. He is survived by his brother Sidney (Esther); and his three children Shelley Zimmerman, Nelson Halpern (Debbie) and Jackie Halpern (Glenn Solomon). His awesome grandchildren include Malka Label (Stan), Aviva Zimmerman (Ofer Matan) and Joel Zimmerman (Genna), Alex Halpern (Erin), Lisa, and Joanna Halpern, Samantha and Michael Solomon, and wonderful great-grandchildren Mira Labell, Charlee and Emma Halpern. May his memory be for a blessing. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to his loving caregivers from 5 to 13 years Adi, KK and Wency, and also to Dr. Botha, Alicja and the staff at The Beverly for their genuine care and comfort. Funeral services were held at Beth Tzedec Congregation (1325 Glenmore Trail SW), on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Interment followed at Erlton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Halpern Family Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Calgary, or to a charity of choice.
