PALMER (PALMI) SOLVASON It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Palmer Solvason, on December 3, 2016 at the Simkin Centre at the age of 98. He was predeceased by his loving wife Jean Solvason; brothers, Kari and Armann (Marie); sisters, Thelma Hjalmarson (John), Helen Larsson (Art), and Florence Burke (Frank). Palmer is survived by his two daughters, Judy Davis (Jim Stuart), Betty Mitchell (Gord); grandchildren, Kathleen Phyper (Chris), Kristine Broos (Dave), Drew and Kaylee Mitchell. Great grandchildren, Ellie and William Phyper, Owen Broos and many nieces and nephews. Palmer was born on October 17, 1918 to Marta and Armann Solvason in Clarkleigh, Manitoba. When he was six years old he lost his father to a farming accident and the family moved into the village of Woodlands where he spent his early years. It was working alongside of his stepfather Olaf in the blacksmith shop he became interested in welding. In the fall of 1941 Palmer was working in Winnipeg as a welder at Dominion Bridge when he met Jean and they were married 6 months later on March 21, 1942. He left soon after for basic training at Camp Borden, Ont. and Jean followed a short time later. She lived in Alliston while he served in Halifax for the Canadian army as a mechanic. After the war ended they returned to Winnipeg and Palmer returned to work at Dominion Bridge. They made their home on Clifton street where they lived for the next 60 years and raised two daughters. In 1982, Palmer retired from Dominion Bridge after 40 years of service. He enjoyed the outdoors either being at the lake fishing or hunting on the farm. He had many talents including teaching himself how to water-ski when he was 49, and taking up cross-country skiing at 62. He was always there to keep our cars running, our fences and decks built, and our basements finished. He would always say, "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right the first time". He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. - Goda Nott, Elska Minn In keeping with Dad's wishes cremation and interment has taken place. A gathering of remembrance will take place in the spring of 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Salvation Army.
