ARNOLD EDWARD MANNESS
Date of Passing: Dec 18, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryARNOLD EDWARD MANNESS With profound sorrow we announce the passing on December 18, 2016 of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend to all, of Arnold Edward Manness; wife, Catherine Colleen; son, Michael; brothers Fred (Carol), Don (Manda), Dale; and sister, Lillian (deceased), and extended family in Manitoba and British Columbia, especially Jane, Jennifer and Leanne Evans. He was predeceased by parents Edward and Elizabeth Manness. From a small town in Manitoba, Arnie grew to be a traveller at heart, taking Colleen (sometimes reluctantly), to all parts of the world. At the age of 21 he was transferred to Vancouver to an office on the 16th floor of the Marine Building (a skyscraper in those days) and found a new home. In 1960 he and Colleen were married and settled in North Vancouver, where they raised their son, Michael. Arnie worked on the waterfront for many years, with Northland Machinery, the National Harbours Board, and Empire Stevedoring during the time when containerization was introduced. He was on the team when the cruise ship facility in Vancouver was developed. At that time Arnie was involved with the Purchasing Management Association of Canada and served as President of the BC chapter, promoting the west coast as "Captain Vancouver" while co-chairing an international conference in Vancouver in 1972. He moved to Vancouver Island in 1991 and continued in the cruise ship industry with Westcan Stevedoring, managing the Ogden Point dock facility until his retirement in 2006. During their retirement years, Arnie was able to fulfil his dream of seeing the world, travelling to Europe, Russia, China, Africa, Asia, Egypt, Australia, South America and Antarctica. He made friends wherever he went with his warm smile and generous heart. Following their travelling years, he and Colleen resided at Berwick Royal Oak in Victoria, BC. The family extends their sincere appreciation to all those who offered support during Arnie's final months. A Celebration of Life is planned at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be left for the family at www.firstmemorialsaanich.com
