Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN MARTENS John Martens, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the Victoria General Hospital on Friday, January 13, 2017, at the age of 91 years. Remaining to forever cherish John's memory are his son Randy (Brenda) and grandchildren, Christopher, Rachel and Ross. He was predeceased by his wife Gloria and his son Ross. John was born on December 5, 1925 in the village of Neuhorst, Manitoba. After finishing High School, he worked as an orderly at the Brandon Hospital for Mental Diseases, then became a permit teacher and taught in rural Manitoba. In 1947, John went to Normal School (Teacher's College) where he met Gloria; they married two years later and embarked on a 60-year adventure together. They moved close to Whitemouth, Manitoba where they jointly ran a two-room school house for five years. They subsequently purchased a farm near Morris, Manitoba where they resided until 1977. As a successful poultry farmer, John was a member of the founding executive of the Manitoba Egg and Poultry Association. He also worked for various agribusinesses in southern Manitoba. After selling the farm, he and Gloria retired to Carman, Manitoba and spent their winters near Palm Springs, California for 29 years, where John was an avid golfer. In compliance with John's wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. The family would like to thank the staff of the 2 North at the Victoria General Hospital for their outstanding and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in John's memory to the Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg MB, R3T 5K9, or manitoba@mccmb.ca. January 19, 2017 It was my privilege to know Johnny for several decades; first meeting him while working on the links of the Carman Golf Course, a place Johnny spent many thousands of hours at his retirement passion, golfing in the company at times of my father. He was one of those rare people that brought more to life than they took; leaving this world a better place. He never left you but feeling happier and more confident in the goodness of life after any time spent with him; a cherished friend to those many who were wise enough to recognize his sterling qualities. A gentle, clever pragmatic man, who possessed the good sense to know what was elementally important and transcendent in life. Thank you for your fine example to all of us who have the challenges presented by life still ahead, that we might run the course and keep our heads high with courage and perseverance even in the face of the challenges that the vicissitudes of old age bring on; as you did so successfully and with magnificent bravery. ~ Paul Sanders, Ottawa, Ontario - Posted by: Paul (Friend) on: Feb 15, 2017

Dear Randy and family, I was sad to read in the paper today that your father has passed away. My connection with your family goes back many years as your Mother, Gloria (Ilchena) was my Grade 7 teacher. Your parents were married at the end of that school year and I have a wedding picture of them that she gave us. Your Mom was one of my best teachers. Her artistic ability was shared with us, her students, and she had a big influence on me becoming a teacher as well. When your Mom passed away, I phoned your Dad and talked to him on the phone and he sent me her obituary. He said to me, "I loved that woman!!" You were blessed to have these wonderful people for your parents. Our prayers are with you at this sad time. May you feel God's comfort. George & Ella Martens PS I would be happy to talk to you if you so desire. - Posted by: Ella Martens (A former student of his wife) on: Jan 21, 2017
