My first memory of Gertie is spending time on a farm with her when I was perhaps three years old: my parents came into Winnipeg to see King George the VI, and his beautiful wife Elizabeth. I was picked up by the family in an old Ford car which required a crank to start, and I was so relieved when it got going. I had a wonderful few days on the farm with such a truly wonderful Icelandic family. Over the years there were many visits to my parents' home in Winnipeg, and Gertie always looked immaculate.
