PAUL MICHAEL KURYLKO, KSV September 4, 1930 - January 13, 2017 It is with great sadness and cherished memories that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and papa, Paul Michael Kurylko, on January 13, 2017. With great relief in our hearts that he is no longer suffering from pain, he will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of 63 years, Helen, daughter Deborah (Barry), son Robert (Lynn), grandchildren; Rebecca (Dave), Jennifer (Calum), Michael (Stephanie), Stephen (Carla), Geoffrey (Desiree), and great-grandchildren Ainsley, Madelyn, Lachlan, Malcolm, Maya and Logan. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Mary, brother David, and sisters Betty and Marion. Born in Pine Ridge, Paul attended Corona School, and later Isaac Newton School. With the untimely death of his mother, Paul wasn't able to continue his education and for a number of years helped his father on the family farm. During this time he and his best friend Rudy (Helen's cousin) worked with Sucharov Electric wiring homes in the Springfield area. Paul then went to work with Dominion Malting and later for the C.N.R, where he continued his education and graduated from Red River College with a diploma in Drafting. He started his career with the City of Transcona as a Draftsman, and over the years worked his way up to Superintendent of Public Works in District 4. Paul was very proud of his accomplishments with the city and very dedicated to his work. His dedication to his work and community earned him the honour of having a street named after him, "Kurylko Cove" in Devonshire Park. Paul and Helen's grandmothers were neighbours in Pine Ridge, and with visiting their cousins and going to barn dances, romance led to a lifetime of love and marriage. They were married in 1953 in St. Michael's Parish in Transcona, where they resided. For Paul, family came first. He was proud of the life his daughter and son made for themselves and their accomplishments. Paul loved the family farm and was delighted that both his daughter and son decided to make their homes on the farm in Pine Ridge. He spent much of his time gardening and was happiest helping his children establish their yards, cutting down bush, mowing grass and teaching them about country life. His five grandchildren were his pride and joy. He watched them grow into the fine young women and men they are today. When the first great-grandchild was born he couldn't be happier, he adored Ainsley with unconditional love and was so proud of her accomplishments. Then years later when more great-grandchildren arrived he was equally as happy. Pictures of Madelyn and Maya brought joy to his heart. He looked forward to their visits. While in the hospital; he would talk the nurses' ears off about how loving and smart Lachlan and Malcolm are. Then, in October, Logan was born! His wish that he would have a great-grandson to carry on the Kurylko name was realized. Paul devoted much time to his Church. He was a member of St. Michael's Parish where he belonged to the Brotherhood, Knights of Columbus, Parish Council and the Board of Directors of St. Michael's Villa. His involvement with the church included calling bingo, making perogies, maintaining the heating system and looking after all things that needed attention. Paul's devotion to his parish was recognized with the honour of being knighted as a Knight of St. Vladimir by His Excellency Metropolitan Huculak. Paul and Helen enjoyed travelling. They took trips across Canada and the U.S. as well as Europe, Australia, Cuba, Hawaii, Mexico, an Alaskan cruise, and most recently a Panama Canal cruise just prior to Paul's encounter with health issues. Paul's last year was spent in the hospital, first at Concordia and then at Seven Oaks Hospitals. The family wishes to thank Dr. Patel and the nurses at Seven Oaks Hospital for the excellent care he received. Special thanks to nurses aides, Ester, Tammy, Dora, Jan and Miguel. He loved and appreciated all of you. Special thanks to Fr. Mark, Fr. Alan, Fr. Michael Krochak, and Fr. Isadore for their visits and prayers. Thanks to St. Michael's Pastoral Care, especially to Norm Kawalchuk for bringing Paul Communion on a regular basis. Also, thanks to St. Joseph Pastoral Care for their visits. A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday, January 21, at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Parish, 400 Day Street, Transcona at 10:00 a.m. Officiates will be Rt. Rev. Fr. Mark Gnutel, Rev. Fr. Michael Krochak, Rev. Fr. Alan Winzinski. Interment will follow at a later date at Birds Hill Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul's memory may be made to St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Parish Renovation Fund or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Helen, we want to offer our condolences to you and your family. You were both great neighbors and we miss you in the neighborhood. Jim often relied on Paul's guidance when it came to gardening, telling me "No Lori, we have to mix the fertilizer like this because Paul said so" He was right because your lawn always looked like a carpet. Take care, you are in our thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Jim & Lori Shaw (Neighbors) on: Jan 20, 2017

  • Paul taught me everything to know about gardening, fishing, hunting, chasing pesky birds, helping the community and church, but most of all how to be an incredible loving father and family leader. Saddle up, tonight we ride. - Posted by: Brian Staszenski (John Wayne Fan Club Member) on: Jan 19, 2017
