SIGRUN (DORIS) MAYER Peacefully on January 11, 2017 in her 94th year. Predeceased by her husband Ed Mayer and survived by her children, Paul (Janine), Lorna (Richard) and Jeff (Lana) and her loving grandchildren, Carly, Paige, Marija and Max, who affectionately knew her as Amma. Doris (nee Eyjolfson) was born in Riverton, Manitoba and was proud of her Icelandic heritage. She is remembered by family and friends as a gracious hostess and talented cook, with her children and many of their friends still enjoying recipes she passed on to them. Not having had a chance to attend university in her youth Doris's intellectual curiosity led her to enter university in middle age. She ably balanced her responsibilities as a wife and mother and proudly graduated the same year as her daughter. Although she did not study fashion or design, Doris had a natural aesthetic sense; she dressed stylishly all her life, enjoyed interior design and had a passion for art, particularly Inuit Art. She was also a keen golfer and bridge player. She spent many enjoyable hours with friends on the fairways of Southwood Golf Club and later in life greatly appreciated the way her bridge friends continued to include her, especially Dee Dee Westdal and Jo Wilson. The family wishes to extend gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Braddan Private Hospital in Vancouver, where Doris spent the last few years of her life and received exceptionally compassionate care. Lorna and Paul, not being resident in Vancouver, also want to express their sincere appreciation to Jeff and Lana for the kindness and support they provided to Doris after she moved to Vancouver in 2014. A family celebration of life is planned at a later date.
