ALMA MCDONALD Alma McDonald passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 29, 2017. She had celebrated her 100th birthday in July of 2016 and was in good health and happy in her home at the Golden West Lodge in Winnipeg. Many thanks to the staff there who provided her with wonderful care. Alma was born in Bruderheim, Alberta in 1916 and was one of ten children. She helped her parents David and Martha Schatz, on the farm and then lived and worked independently in Alberta and Manitoba until she met and married her husband John McDonald in 1948. They built a home together on Nassau Street in Winnipeg. Alma worked for many years at The Bay in downtown Winnipeg, and the Winnipeg Winter Club, while her husband John looked after the rail cars at the CN shops near their Nassau St home. John passed away in 1969 and Alma continued to support her son Don as a single parent until his marriage to Cheryl Penny in 1976. She was a great and loving support of her family both in Alberta and here in Manitoba. Grandma Alma was especially important to Ben, Chris and Karen her grandchildren while they were growing up in Onanole as well as when we lived in Val Marie, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg. She is survived by her sisters, Eunice Schmidt and Evelyn Thompson; sister-in-law Ruth Schultz and brother Rueben Schatz (Eileen) in Alberta as well as her son Don McDonald (Cheryl Penny) in Onanole and her grandchildren, Ben McDonald (son Ky), Chris Bristow (Chelsea), Karen McDonald in BC. We all have wonderful memories of our time together and will miss her dearly. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
