HERBERT FERJAN On February 1, 2017, Herbert Ferjan, at the age of 88, left this world for one without pain, with beautiful mountains, and where he can paint, garden, fish, and dance to his favourite polka music. He was born on May 6, 1928, in Rechberg, Austria. He later moved to Kuhnsdorf, Austria, where he later started following a beautiful girl home from school. He has said that the moment he saw her, he knew he loved her, and that he had to marry her. On June 14, 1953, he did just that, and married that same beautiful woman, Lotte, and they spent the rest of their lives together. They made the brave decision to come to Canada in 1957 by steam ship with their two oldest children. After arriving in Canada, their family continued to expand, and they had a full house, and a happy life with five children. He worked for the City of Winnipeg for 28 years as a supervisor, creating beautiful parks and gardens. As a hobby, one that started due to being homesick for Austria, he began painting scenery, from various memories, and was a well known artist. Though Herbert had many ups and downs through his life, it was a life filled with love, right up until his last day. Herbert is survived by his loving wife, Lotte, his children: Herb, Trudy (Heinz), Walter (Elaine), Sonja, Fred (Lainie), and by his seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Inge, along with two other sisters and one brother in Austria. He is even missed by his two parrots, who call his name throughout the day, waiting for him. The family would also like to thank the Home Care workers for their help in caring for Herbert the past years. A private service is being held in his honour. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Two years today, but it feels like yesterday. We still miss you and love you. You're always in our thoughts and in our hearts. - Posted by: Melissa (Granddaughter & Family) on: Feb 01, 2019

  • Hello, I am sorry to hear about your loss. I own 2 of Herbert’s paintings. Would you like them? I travel to Winnipeg to see my Mom, and can drop them off when I’m next there. They are both small, in a frame about 10*12 inches. I know this is an odd way to communicate to you. Sorry about that. I was just doing an internet search to see if I could find out who painted the two paintings I own. My email is lauradarlington180@gmail.com. Please drop me a line and let me know if you want them. - Posted by: Laura Darlington (No relation) on: Sep 22, 2018

  • I first met Herbert in the late 1950's---we were both working for the City of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation Dept. I was still attending school and he had just arrived from Austria. We worked a lot together that summer and Bill Verasky and I learned to swear in Austrian and he in English. He wasn't the biggest guy but strong as a bull. Eventually I also worked for Parks and Recreation for 33 years in different parts of the City but our paths crossed many times over the years, especially at Employee Special Events where Herbert donated his beautiful paintings that were used as door prizes. We all had great respect for his many skills on the job and he was fun to be around. My condolences to Lotte and Family. - Posted by: John Mirus (Friend and fellow Parks and Recreation Employee.) on: Feb 19, 2017

  • His door was always open, if there was something to be done, to get dinner ready... you were not asked if you were part of the family and your hands became full... while he made his way to his BBQ. How he made steak taste so wonderful I will never know! Always a smile. I truly feel that I have lost a large part from my childhood. Please know, my heart is with all of you! - Posted by: Whitney Wakeman (Lester Beach Family) on: Feb 12, 2017

  • My deepest condolences to the family. I remember as a child being awed at the talent he had and feeling very blessed to be able to purchase a beautiful painting for my mother for mothers day. He was a kind man and you will feel the loss of him forever but he is watching over you from a much better place now and no longer suffering. - Posted by: Pat Steele (friend) on: Feb 11, 2017
