MERVIN LEONARD MAUTHE It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Merv Mauthe on February 8, 2017, at Concordia Hospital, at the age of 63 with family by his side. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Donna; daughters Erin (Pete) and Julie (Vlad); mother Irene; brothers Darryl (Mary-jean, Robyn, Ian) and Grant (Bella, Thomas, Amanda, Alex). He was predeceased by his father Philip. Mervin was born in Winnipeg on March 27, 1953. His lifelong love for music started at the age of eight when he was first introduced to the accordion. Through the years, he became an accomplished musician and educator mastering many forms of music. He went on to become the National Curriculum Program Director for Yamaha Canada Music (1975 to 1979); the Education Director for Major and Minor Music (1979 to 1984), which then lead to his final career as the National Music Education Director for Technics Canada where he travelled the world for the next 20 years inspiring many with his musical expertise. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother, mentor and friend. He touched us all through his gentle humour, kindness and wit. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, February 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly Avenue. Donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Memorial Fund. Condolences & Memories (18 entries)

  • I just happened to think of Merv and found this obituary. He was one of the instructors at our Yamaha music camp at Carleton in 1982. He was a nice guy and very inspirational. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Kevin Gould (Student) on: Aug 15, 2023

  • I was a young girl when I met Merv as he was the examiner of my Organ exam about 29 years ago. He was kind, soft spoken and very encouraging. Through my music years, he was also my adjudicator at many festivals until I became a teacher and he worked hard with myself and many others to train us as educators. The training I got from Merv is what I credit to my strong point as a teacher now, 20 years later. Merv always told us to teach with heart and be kind. He taught us how to love our students and ourselves through the best and toughest days. Merv brought wisdom, creativity, life and excitement to music. As brilliant as he was, he was never higher than anyone else. He was an amazing teacher and force of energy. Even when our paths through music disconnected, Merv and I always kept in touch, especially when I opened my first music school. He was the strong champion that gave me hope...the support system that told me to keep trying-keep pushing because the world needed new energy. I learned more through him about myself as a teacher and business woman than anyone else. Merv always did his best to read my 2 hour long emails and reply...poor fellow, who else would take time to read the emails and not think I was crazy! That was just who he was. Constant support and lifelong mentor. I recently found out he passed (which was on my birthday) and was very deeply saddened. Merv had many years left to inspire us. I am so very sad that we cannot enjoy his light anymore but through his love of music, he has touched us all. My condolences still, even almost a year later to his family who are still missing him and wishing he could come back. Merv will be with us always. Until we meet again and join in a song, Thank you Merv for adding your sparkle to my life. - Posted by: Lisa Ammirati (student) on: Oct 25, 2017

  • For me, Merv was a Mentor, an Inspiration, and a Friend. So many of his lessons both in Music and in Life are woven into the fabric of my being and for that I am eternally grateful. I will forever cherish his memory in my heart, and I feel blessed to have had him in my life. Donna, Julie and Erin, may God grant you peace and comfort at this time. - Posted by: Tim Nachtigall (Student (Major & Minor), Education Colleague (Music Place/Technics Canada)) on: Feb 25, 2017

  • I worked with Merv for many years while we were both at Technics Music during the mid 80's early 90's. Merv and I often traveled together as he played in concerts or acted as an inspiration to upcoming students in the TMA program. Merv was fun, talented, dedicated and a good friend. My sincerest condolences to Merv's family and to the music community in general. I trust that the angels will know what a versatile musician is in their midst. May you rest in peace, Merv! - Posted by: David Dempsey (Colleague (Previously of Technics Music Canada)) on: Feb 23, 2017

  • It is with deep regret to hear of the passing of dear Merv. We have been privileged to have known him as a neighbor-friend. but most of all as a fabulous musician. We had great times dancing to his music and on occasion even sang a song with his musicians. We will certainly miss him. The Winnipeg music community has lost a great musician and friend. Thank you for being part of our lives. Jens & Annette - Posted by: Jens & Annette (Friends) on: Feb 20, 2017

  • We will remember Merv as our colleague and friend who added so much ‘art’ and such significance to keyboard writing, education and performance. As educators and for many years, we were fortunate to have represented Merv’s high standard in music education. I for one, always left his seminars thinking “ I never want to forget what I have just heard” - We will remember Merv Sharon (Dyksman) Stuart - Posted by: Sharon (Dyksman) Stuart () on: Feb 20, 2017

  • My sympathies to you, Donna, and your family. I remember Merv's energy and passion for the music he loved. He was "Mr. Yamaha" for me in so many ways. I lost my husband two years ago as well. Wishing you and your family all the best as you adjust your lives in this new way. May you feel peace and a higher presence holding you. - Posted by: Connie Epp (Yamaha Teacher) on: Feb 13, 2017

  • So sorry to learn of Merv's passing. He taught 3 generations of our family on organ/keyboards and what a privilege to spend time with such a musical talent. Always enjoyed getting out to hear him play around Winnipeg. He will be missed. - Posted by: Shelley Morris (Friend) on: Feb 12, 2017

  • Merv was an inspiration to those whose lives he touched. His compositions and ensembles were used in my Yamaha keyboard classes and they brought joy to those of us who played them! So very sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Teresa Sanecki (Co worker Yamaha Music) on: Feb 12, 2017

  • Heather and I were deeply saddened by the news of Merv's passing. It's been many years since we worked together at Major & Minor and played in the “Just Five” but those days were the foundation of our lives to come. Merv and Donna, Irene and Phil were always kind, generous and helpful. We have many fond memories of happy times with the Mauthes and many evenings making music late into the night in the basement on Foxgrove. Merv was a fabulous musician, a great teacher, a loyal friend and co-worker. He left an indelible impression on all the lives he touched. Thinking of Donna and all of Merv's family with sympathy and hope that time will bring comfort to your heart. “THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND, WE THOUGHT THEY'D NEVER END” - Posted by: Wayne and Heather Neville (old friends) on: Feb 12, 2017

  • I was a Yamaha student in organ many, many years ago. Merv was incredibly talented and patient with me and my very gifted fellow students. I played by ear, not reading music so his talent allowed me to grow and develop. I was a kid who couldn't read music but he made me feel like I could do anything and I did, winning contests and accomplishing big pieces of music. It was a pleasure to watch him play and I moved away from Winnipeg many years ago but never forgot this wonderful experience. So sorry he is gone so soon and far too young. So sorry for your tremendous loss. - Posted by: Margaret (Kokorsch) Zed (Former Yamaha student) on: Feb 11, 2017

  • It is undeniable that the Music community has suffered a great loss with the passing of Merv. His love for wanting to share music with the world was a force like no other. Whether he was overseas in London, Tokyo or stopping by our Music School in Medicine Hat, Alberta, he never lost sight of what he was doing. From time to time he would come here to examine our students or adjudicate a festival. Merv always made us feel like we were just as important as any other school across the country. When the exams or adjudications were finished he always had time to share stories of his adventures around the work. I retired from teaching a few years ago and am so grateful that I was fortunate to cross paths with Merv. To those that never got that chance they will never know what a wonderful man he was. My condolences to go out to his family. May you rest in peace Merv. - Posted by: Laurie Morrison (Music Teacher) on: Feb 11, 2017
