ERNEST JACK CASTELANE 1928 - 2017 Ernest J. Castelane "Ernie" passed away peacefully at Toronto's Baycrest Apotex Home for the Aged, in his 89th year. Beloved husband of his beautiful wife Irene "Pickles" whom he adored, Irene and Ernie were married for 67 years. Loving father of Linda, Deborah and Janine (Mark). He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his grandsons, Caelan and Braedan. Also survived by his cherished brother Ron (the late Patsy), as well as his nieces and nephews, Karen (Dan), Cole (Carla), Susan (George) and Mark (Olana) and their families. Ernie was born and raised in Winnipeg Manitoba, he graduated from St. Paul's High School, where he played football for them and also the Winnipeg Rods. Ernie loved sports and also enjoyed hockey, basketball, boxing, golf and curling. Later in life he and Irene enjoyed being members of the Bayview Golf and Country Club where they and their friends played golf and curled. Ernie was very competitive in sports and in business and was often the life of the party. Ernie began working as a young boy delivering newspapers, his career began at the Royal Bank in Humbolt, Saskatchewan where he met Irene (Pickles). They were married in 1949 and moved to Winnipeg. Ernie was a very hard worker and applied his competitive nature to becoming an extremely successful business man. He worked his way up in the financial services and banking industry in Winnipeg, Calgary and Toronto. He became VP of Finance at the Traders Group and eventually VP of Finance at Credit Foncier. When Ernie retired he and Irene bought a home in Florida near friends and would spend part of the year there golfing and enjoying life. Ernie was a true tough guy who had a sense of humour and a joyous zest for life. He truly loved his family and his friends and will be missed deeply. We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers at the Baycrest Apotex for caring for Ernie in the last few years of his life. We would like to thank Ernie's private caregiver Jeremy Fielding in going beyond what was expected and created a special friendship with Ernie that made him so happy. Ernie was truly loved by all. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2017 in the Chapel of the Thompson Funeral Home (530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, ON) at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to either the Alzheimer's Association of York Region, Baycrest Health Care Centre or the Children's Wish Foundation.
