DAVID W. GIESBRECHT (Retired Captain) Retired Air Canada Captain David W. Giesbrecht passed away in the comfort of his Langley, B.C. home at dawn on February 9, 2017, at 83 years of age. Dave was born in Roland, Manitoba as the sixth of nine children to Jacob Giesbrecht and Elizabeth Braun. He was formally educated in agriculture at the University of Manitoba. He joined Transair for a brief stint before a 25-year career with Air Canada. He retired in 1991, relocating to Langley shortly thereafter. Dave would often speak of his good fortune that allowed him to live out his aviation passion, both as an airline pilot and as a designer, builder, and championship flyer of RC model airplanes. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy (nee Schubert); his son David (Kamila) with grandsons, Matthew and Michael, son Scott (Olive) with grandson Liam; as well as siblings, John, Ruth, Art, Len, and Adelaide. He was predeceased by his first grandson Konrad in 2011. Dave will make one last flight home from British Columbia to Manitoba, where he will come to rest under the prairie skies. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. In lieu of a formal service and flowers, support is planned and kindly requested for Dave's preferred charities, the BC Children's Hospital and a number of pediatric cancer research initiatives.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • It was with great saddens that I learned of the passing of my friend and colleague Capt. David Giesbrecht. I think back with fondness on the days gone by when we flew together on the DC-9. I was honoured to have flown with Dave during the month before he retired. We last shared the cockpit together on Aug.15 1991. During Dave's last visit to Winnipeg last fall we got together for what was to be our final visit and reminisced of flying the parries together. He was a fine gentleman and mentor. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Capt. John Nakielny (retired) - Posted by: Capt. John Nakielny retired (colleague) on: Feb 25, 2017
