JOHN MISKO In his 72nd year, after a brief struggle with cancer, on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, John Daniel Misko peacefully passed, with his wife by his side, at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. He leaves behind his wife Susan (nee Smith); daughter Stacey; son Dan (Rebecca); grandchildren Kyran and Sophie; sister Joan Stefanik, and mother-in-law Gwen. He was preceded in death by his father John Sr., mother Anne (nee Zurba), brother Bill, and father-in-law Don. John was dearly loved by many family members and devoted friends. John was born in Winnipeg to Anne (nee Zurba) and John Misko on January 1, 1945. He went to Inkster School. He married Susan (nee Smith) on February 14, 1975 in Winnipeg. After working as a painter/decorator John went back to school and became a teacher, graduating from Red River College. Until he retired at age 52 he taught a shops class at R.B. Russell School. For the past 11 years John and Susan wintered in Texas where they met many wonderful friends. John was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and went fishing every opportunity he could. He enjoyed entertaining and would often have friends and family over. He was actively involved in the church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 23, at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2400 Portage Ave. with Father Carl Tarnapolski of St. Emiles Church, officiating. Interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials/donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. The family of John wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Health Sciences Centre and Pinawa Hospital, as well as family and friends.

Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • Archie and I were shocked and saddened to hear of John's passing. We were in Florida at the time and unable to attend the service. Our memories of John include his unwavering enthusiasm for the outdoors which he shared with his students and friends and also his deep commitment to family and community. Please accept our deepest sympathy for John's passing. We wish Susan and the family comfort and solace through memory and the support of those near and dear. • I remember John from Grade 7 at Isaac Newton and at St. John's. He liked music and in our grade 11 classroom, I remember him getting dance steps from Sandi Ross. He wanted to be a smooth swinger. He was a very outgoing person and someone you would warm up to. I had lost contact with him and then, my mother had her interior of her house painted and the painter was no other than John. Sorry to see you go. - Posted by: colin dederick (school mate) on: Feb 24, 2017

  • I am sorry to have read of John's untimely passing. John and I knew each other since grade seven at Issac Newton Jr. High. On most days, for three years, we walked to and from school together. Over the years, I loved running into John. We would talk of the "old days" in the north end and our passion for fishing. He would keep me informed on all his Master Angler awards. Great guy! My sincere condolences to his family. Scott Johnston - Posted by: Scott Johnston (Friend) on: Feb 20, 2017
