JIM POTTER Born: August 20, 1918 Date Of Passing: February 22, 2017 The morning of February 22 was kinder and gentler than most Winnipeg February mornings. Temperatures were above zero, and water was running in the streets. It's fitting that it would be on this day that we would say goodbye to the kind and gentle spirit of father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Jim Potter. At 98 years old, Jim passed peacefully at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre and will be profoundly missed by his daughter, Marsha Notley, son-in-law, Garry Notley, grandchildren, Marni-Jo Townsley (Darren), Gary Notley (Donna) and Christopher Notley (Michelle), and great-grandchildren Benjamin, Ganon, Liam, Owen and Kira. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Hazel, 20 years ago on February 28, 1997. Much of Jim's adult life was spent working for the C.N.R. He was grateful for the opportunities, experiences, and camaraderie and always spoke fondly of his years working for the C.N., whether it was as a carman in Port Arthur, or later as the General Foreman of the Car Department at the Transcona Shops. As dedicated as Jim was to the C.N., he cultivated numerous interests beyond the C.N. gates. Jim's creativity and attention to detail made him an exceptional photographer, craftsman and horticulturalist. But Jim's greatest passion was people. He delighted in making connections with others and would take steps to ensure they knew they were valued. Especially valued was Jacqui Kyle, whose unflagging friendship meant so much to Hazel and Jim for many years. Jim's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre who not only lovingly supported Jim in his final months, but his family as well. "I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." - Stephen Grellet A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28 at Wheeler Funeral Home,1800 Day Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity that touches your heart.
