Date of Passing: Feb 26, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCARL JOHN MATTSON On Sunday, February 26, 2017, just before his 90th birthday, Carl threw his last pitch. It is with great sadness we announce that Carl passed comfortably in his sleep after a two month stay at St. Boniface Hospital. Carl will be remembered by his son Garry (Sharon); his beloved grandsons, Sean and Erik; brother Jim and sister Phyllis; as well as by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his deeply loved wife of 59 years Gwen, who passed away in February 2016; his mother Lena; father Peter; brothers, Ron and Ralph; mother-in-law Rebecca; father-in-law Hugh; sister-in-law Doris and brothers-in law, Ron and Ed. On April 13, 1927, Carl was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba and attended Norwood High School. He had an extensive employment career with General Motors, Rexall Drugs, Redboine Drugs, General Stationary and Cunningham Office Furniture with whom he retired at age 65. Retirement did not sit well with Carl as he went back to work with Cunningham's until he finally retired at the age of 82. He was an extremely dedicated and well respected employee. Carl had great baseball and hockey careers in Winnipeg in the 1940's and 50's, with baseball being his true passion. He began his baseball career in 1945 playing for the Norwood Juniors, then moved over and played two years with the Elmwood Giants. He continued playing many years of senior baseball with various teams and in 2000, Carl was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also a skilled hockey player, winning an Intermediate "C" championship with Warren in 1955-56. He stayed active in both sports coaching youth baseball and hockey after he retired from playing. Carl really enjoyed travelling down to the United States for vacations, with Minneapolis and Chicago being his favorite destinations. In compliance with Carl's wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Our sincere appreciation goes out to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital units 5E and 6A South for making Carl's stay at the hospital as comfortable as possible. In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to a charity of your choice.
