Date of Passing: Feb 19, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLIONEL RICHARD CALLOW It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Lionel Richard Callow in his 84th year, February 19, 2017. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Lillian, his three children, Ken, Cheryl Aab (Don), and Gerald, grandchildren Lindsay, Lisa and Kelly, sister Joyce (George) Wieb, sister-in-law, Joyce Callow, brother-in-law Dan Wieb, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his twin brother Clifford in 1990, and parents Henry and Ivy. Lionel was always active, participating in tumbling with his brother as a young man, trampoline as a young adult, hockey, golf, curling, baseball, and skiing. His real joy was in the water swimming any chance he got. He spent time at his parents' cottage at Grand Beach where he later took his young family, and then at Valhalla Beach where he built a cottage of his own. Many happy summers were spent boating, swimming, horseback riding and spending time with his brother and family. Lionel's career was with Manitoba Hydro, as a technical electrical draftsman, which enabled him to travel up North often and to Russia. Lillian and Lionel travelled extensively in the U.S. and Mexico. They began travelling to Hawaii in the 1980s and it was their retirement haven for two months every year for well over 20 years. Lil, Lionel, Cliff and his wife Joyce spent many happy years wintering in Hawaii, swimming, sunning, socializing with their "Hawaii buddies" and enjoying the good life until Lionel could no longer travel due to his dementia and lymphoma. He was a wonderful, fun father and grandfather. He was a very active father and took his kids skating, swimming, tobogganing, skiing and boating. He was a real fix it guy and could always be found rooting around in his screws and tools in the basement. He loved his family. He loved nature. He loved water. He loved animals big and small, and especially loved his dogs. We will miss our dad, and mom will miss him dearly. He enjoyed a good life. He was loved. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Grace for giving us more time with Lionel. Thank you to the many blood donors who did the same. Thank you to the Park Manor Nursing Home and the wonderful nurses, health care aides and all who helped make this his home away from home with their caring touch and loving hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, March 9, 1:00 p.m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, 1800 Day St., Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place in accordance with Lionel's wishes.
