DONALD GORDON CASSIE February 17, 1943 - February 24, 2017 Peacefully, with family at his side, Don passed away on Friday, February 24, 2017 at St. Boniface Hospital. Don fell sick on Christmas Eve while visiting family for the holidays. He will be sadly missed by siblings, Reg, Norman (Sylvia), Elaine (Bill), sister-in-law Patricia, his beloved nieces and nephews, longtime friends Mel and Jeanne Dixon, his fur buddy (Captain) Jack, as well as a large number of friends and acquaintances on Vancouver Island. Don was predeceased by his wife, Linda, parents, and brother, Marshall. Don was mostly self-employed and operated a number of businesses in Winnipeg and Vancouver Island ranging from a used car lot in Winnipeg, Red's Classic Café and Red's Model Car Store in Coombs. Cars were Don's passion and he collected a number of classic cars, including his favourite 1951 Mercury which he drove around the Coombs area. Don and Linda moved to Vancouver Island in 1990 living mostly in the Coombs / Parksville area. Don was well known and was easily recognized as "Red" with his long red hair. The family would like to thank medical and support staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion shown to Don, notably the 7th Floor S, Step-Down and ICU Nursing, Support and Surgical Teams. Nursing and Surgical were always forthcoming in updating family on the wards and team meetings in the ICU; many direct phone calls from the Surgical Team were especially appreciated. A private service to be held at a later date. Donations, if desired, may be made to St. Boniface Hospital Foundation. You are greatly missed Don, with love.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I met Don through his brother Reg, who was considered my uncle. As a child I always had great respect for him and hearing of his loss saddens me greatly. I do wish strength to the family who many I knew and found kind to a young one in a distressful situation. You were all so wonderful. Rest well, Don. - Posted by: Tracey Kominowski-Leclerc (Family Friend) on: Aug 15, 2018

It seemed just like yesterday that we were all in Palm Springs and up the mountain.I came across a picture which brought back some wonderful memories when we spent time with Don and you going all over Palm Springs. That was Jan 2013. Our deepest condolences to you and all your family. • My sincere condolences to the Cassie family for their loss of Don. Although a few years younger than Don, we became good friends along with Al Warrington and spent a lot of good times tinkering with old cars and such. I fondly remembering the days of sneaking into the North Main Drive-in as we scraped the cost of Don's addmission for him to drive in, with the rest of us, Marshall (Moose), Norman, Al and I hiding in the trunk to have money for popcorn. Pouring dirty gas in the backlane that ran 35 odd feet to the sewer manhole and later someone tossing a cigarette down that lit the gas and the flame tore down the center of the lane to the manhole and blew the heavy cover 10 feet in the air.
