Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD FREDERICK BARRETT Donald Frederick Barrett, aged 97 years, passed away March 3, 2017 at Veterans' Village Seniors' Home in Saskatoon, SK. He is survived by his son, Doug (Calgary) and grandsons, Tyler (Winnipeg) and Shane (Calgary); as well as cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada and the UK. Don was predeceased by his wife, Anne (Saskatoon); his parents, Fred and Annie Jane and his brothers, Alec and Maurice (UK). He was born in West Dulwich, south London on November 30, 1919. Don was schooled, played numerous sports and subsequently worked in that city until volunteering with the RAF in 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War. Don served in the Asian theatre with various RAF squadrons and Gurkha regiments throughout the Indian Peninsula, Burma and the Andaman Islands. His brothers also served in that region, Alec with the British Army and Maurice with the RAF. The three of them were most fortunate to be able to meet on a number of occasions during the conflict and survive the war unscathed. Don and Anne immigrated to Canada from the UK in 1948. He had a varied and successful career with Canadian National Railways in Saskatoon and Winnipeg that ended with his retirement in 1983. Always an avid golfer and curler, Don continued those activities upon retirement, as well as returning to artistic pursuits, including oil and acrylic painting, wood carving, photography and music. His other passion was gardening, using many 'tricks' learned from his father that resulted in successful vegetable and flower productions. He reveled in his grandsons' studies, interests and activities with his particular British flare... to us he will always be 'the last Victorian Englishman'. Don will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Saskatoon. Arrangements are ongoing. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.

Doug, I just wanted to leave my condolences on the loss of your dad. I don't know if you remember me, we met when you came to Saskatoon on your mom's passing. I believe I was with Mutual life back then. I always enjoyed my meetings with your dad and will always remember them. I could have sat there for hours listening to his stories of the war and his younger days. He made a huge impression on me and just wanted you to know how much I thought of him. I wish you all the best. Robyn - Posted by: Robyn Henke (friend) on: Jan 07, 2021
