BARBARA ELIZABETH DUKE ROMANO Barbara Elizabeth Duke Romano passed away January 9, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta. Barbara is survived by two children, Laura Pearce (Jeff) of Salt Spring Island, BC, and David Romano of Calgary; two grandchildren Jesica and Virginia; husband James Romano of Calgary; and brother Peter Duke (Barbara) of Winnipeg. Barbara was predeceased by her brothers, Ronald Duke (Pat) of Chilliwack, BC, and Vernon Duke (Audrey) of Winnipeg, MB. Those of us who knew and loved her feel blessed to have had this special woman in our lives. She was an extraordinary woman; loving, compassionate and empathetic above all, but also a rock, strong and self-assured, to those who sought her friendship or council. Barbara constantly sought and explored spirituality, and this authentic, life-long quest imbued her personal and professional relationships. Her many grateful clients and loyal friends are a testament to her genuine goodness and strength of character. She was truly one of a kind. Barbara was born in Edmonton, AB, on April 16, 1937. Her parents, Charles and Laurel Duke, eventually moved their young family to Winnipeg where she grew up, first on Valour Rd. then later Telfer St. Barbara attended the University of Winnipeg for her undergraduate degree, and afterward the University of Manitoba for her Masters in Social Work. She also earned a Masters in Psychology. Her professional life invariably involved helping others, especially children. Barbara worked at the Children's Aid Society in Toronto, then later worked directly under the Attorney General of Ontario. Barbara also worked at the Child Guidance Centre, St. Boniface Hospital and finally opened a private practice in Winnipeg. She moved to Calgary in the 1990s where she continued her private practice and resided until her passing. We invite anyone who had the good fortune to have had Barbara touch their lives to come and celebrate her life with us on March 25, 2017, at the University Woman's Club of Winnipeg (drop-in, between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., 54 West Gate, Winnipeg). Come join us in raising a glass to Barbara and sharing some memories with both tears and laughter. Feel free to contact Laura by email at lauraromano@hotmail.com or 403-837-3977.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I feel very honoured to have known Barb for the last 20 years of her life. Barb was truly into Life-Long Learning. And she always had to learn from the best. On the way to one of her workshops, she said she had to define herself in one word and was having trouble finding that word. I said "Open" .Barb was open to all people, ideas, and new experiences, whether it was Women Warriors or para sailing off Hawaii, where dolphins helped her to shore. She was a part of all that she had met. She was my muse. I followed her path into many areas of her learning and she and these experiences greatly expanded my life. I visited her in her Calgary residences and a mutual friend, Colette Corcoran flew from Ireland so we could visit Barb together. We went out for pizza and I asked Barb is she could have wine and she vigorously shook her head "yes", and lifted her hand to show us she could drink. Although her language was limited, she seemed to understand every word and took part in our discussions. Farewell Friend. See you at the next level.
