ELEANORE MELNYK It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Eleanore Melnyk on March 15, 2017, at the age of 94, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mom, or Mommer as she was known; is survived by her daughter Mariyka, (son-in-law Horst Hirschfeld); her pride and joy grandchildren Tatiana Penner (husband Mark) and Dustin Hirschfeld; also her dear son Gregory, (daughter-in-law Linda) of Arroyo Grande, California Mommer was predeceased by our father, William Melnyk in 1984. She was born in Poland of parents Maria and Karol Strykowski and immigrated to Winnipeg as a young child. Mommer was an avid gardener and spent hour upon hour in her garden. There was no plant that she didn't love and often brought home plants for which she did not have a place in her garden, but was always able to find a bit of soil for them. She was a life long member of the West Kildonan Horticultural Society. Mom loved to sit on her patio looking out into her garden and watch the birds. As she said, her backyard was her world. Mom's second passion was dessert. One of her favourite sayings was, "Life is short; eat your dessert first!". To honour Mommer and her great passions, gardening and desserts, a Garden Tea Party will be held once the flowers are all in bloom this summer. If friends so desire, donations may be made to her favourite charity, The Winnipeg Humane Society.

I was so sorry to hear of Eleanor's passing. She was a truly beautiful person, a wonderful neighbor and friend. My fondest memories are of meeting Eleanor in her front yard or talking over the backyard fence. My daughters loved to talk about plants/trees in her yard and the fish in her pond with Eleanor when they were younger and she got to be quite close with my mother, always calling her "the angel" prior to her death in 2015. Eleanor made the best cookies and would often bring them over. As a family, we will miss her laughter and conversation. Heart felt condolences from our family to yours. - Posted by: Katherine Nelson (Neighbor next door) on: Mar 30, 2017
