DEBORAH (DEBBIE) LYNN JOAN NIKIEL (nee STRACHAN) February 4, 1955 - March 11, 2017 It is with immense sadness and heartbreak that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, wife, and friend, Debbie Nikiel on March 11, 2017, with family by her side, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 62. Debbie is survived by her husband Manfred, son Tyler, her uncle Barry and cousins Charlie (Lori) and Kelly Lynn (Darrell) of North Carolina, as well as many dear friends and other family members, all of whom loved her dearly and will greatly mourn her passing. She was predeceased by her parents William and Joan Strachan, her brother Michael, her grandparents Ed and Gwen Curtis all of Barrie, Ontario, as well as her aunt Lynda of North Carolina. Debbie was born on February 4, 1955 in Barrie, Ontario, where she was raised by her loving parents. In the 1970s she moved to Winnipeg, where she worked at CKY-TV, where she eventually met her husband Manfred of 28 years and married in 1988. In 1992 Debbie gave birth to her son, Tyler and after being a loving stay-at-home mother during his early years, in 1997 she began working at Greenway School, where she remained until the time of her death, working passionately as the Parent Centre Coordinator. Her son will remember her as a loving mother who encouraged him to pursue his dreams and goals, and who he could always depend on for support. Debbie was a caring individual who loved helping and working with children and their families and was deeply passionate about contributing to the Greenway School Community. She will be remembered as an eccentric individual who could always light up a room with her infectious laugh, smile, and sense of humour, as well as a dear and caring friend to many people. The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring doctors, nurses and staff of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Health Sciences Centre for their efforts and kindness, as well as her many dear friends and their families for their support. Cremation has taken place and a service will be held 10:00 a.m. at Saint Anthony of Padua Hungarian Catholic Church, located at 365 Burnell Street. Father Diosdado Parrenas will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Debbie's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Health Sciences Centre Foundation or The Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Debbie. 204-782-3541 www.kilcollinscremationservice.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Lue and I are heartbroken to hear of Debbie's passing. I worked for years at CKY-TV/CTV. Debbie and Manfred are a major part of the "CKY Family" who we grew to love in those years. While we have rarely seen each other over the last 17 years, I still consider Deb and Manfred to be forever friends. This is a horrible loss for Manfred, Tyler, the family, and everyone who's lives she touched. We wish them all, our heartfelt condolences. I really wish I could be in Winnipeg on Friday for the services. - Posted by: Roy Pennington (Friend) on: Mar 28, 2017

  • It is so sad to hear about Debbie's passing. I remember picking her up from the train station with Todd when she first moved to Winnipeg from Barrie. I also was a boarder at her (and Todd's) house when they lived on Lenore. In some ways it seems like yesterday. My condolences to her family.
