EVELYN (POWELL) DENTON 1908 2017 Evelyn (Powell) Denton died in Halifax, N.S., on March 30, 2017, well into her 109th year. She was born November 12, 1908, in Aulac, N.B., daughter of Thomas Leonard Powell and Mabel (Giles) Powell. She attended Amherst Academy and Acadia Ladies Seminary; graduated from Peterborough Teachers' College and Acadia University. She taught in schools in Peterborough, Toronto, and Digby Co., N.S. After the death of her husband, Rev. Dr. Harvey L. Denton, in 1965, she taught at Halifax West High School until her retirement. She lived happily in a retirement home and later nursing homes in Halifax for a quarter century. She is survived by her son Thomas Denton (June) of Winnipeg; her daughter Carol Snair (Roy) of Halifax who managed the care of her mother for many years; her daughter Evelyn Dickinson (Rev. John) of Digby and a large family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their spouses and relations, and by a great host of other relatives. She was predeceased by her sister Dorothy (Mrs. Malcolm Shaffner), and by her grandchildren, Cathy and David MacKay. Evelyn had a great interest in genealogy and was the oldest surviving descendant of United Empire Loyalists in Nova Scotia, perhaps in Canada. She researched the fifteen generations of the Powell and Denton families from their arrival in North America in 1635. A memorial service will be held in Halifax at a later date.
