EDGAR SVINGEL RASMUSSEN April 21, 1932 - April 1, 2017 Edgar (aka Doida to his kids, GrandDork to his grandkids) was born on April 21, 1932 - at home in Ross, Manitoba. His father, Carl Emil Rasmussen was born June 26, 1884 in Horsens, Denmark. His mother, Ingrid Marie Christiansen was born February 11, 1892 in Silkeborg, Denmark. He spent his early years on the homestead in Ross, Manitoba and attended church at the Ostenfeld Lutheran Church. He attended school in Ross, Manitoba until grade 7 when the family moved to Winnipeg and he then attended Luxton School and St. John's High School. Edgar was predeceased by both of his parents, his wife Marian (nee Cebula), son Rev. Dr. Barry Grant Rasmussen, his older brothers Carl Christian and Jens Emil. He is survived by his sweetie Liz Schaerer, sister Margit Astrid Walker, daughters Debbie and Deana Rasmussen, "like a daughter" Tania Schaerer, daughter-in-law Karen Rasmussen-Oke, granddaughters Amy Rasmussen Waluk and Michelle Grant, and great-grandchildren Rowan Waluk, Jude Waluk, Rylan Grant, and Marek Grant. Edgar joined the Winnipeg Police Force February 10, 1955 and served until his retirement September 10, 1988. He was an active member in both Sherwood Park Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church. After retirement he worked part time as a driver for Child and Family Services transporting children to appointments. He enjoyed his relationships with these kids immensely. He also delivered mail part time in rural Springfield. He loved playing games and often played in cribbage tournaments. Prior to arthritis he enjoyed many rounds of golf - although some of the trees where his 3 iron is wrapped around may not agree. He and his sweetie played in a weekly Golden Age Whist club in Garson, Manitoba. He was an animal lover and had many beloved pets. He even kept dog biscuits by his bed side for any visiting dogs in the hospital. He loved carpentry and made many projects for himself and all of his family members. He had a dry sense of humour and even in the last days of life he'd say "no matter what you gotta have fun." He lived this way himself, enjoying perfecting the best batch of wine, savouring chocolate and always taking time to make each family event fun. He had a unique way of making everyone close to him feel special and have a laugh, whether it be making a batch of 'grandad cookies' for his grandkids or composing a personal and hilarious poem for any occasion. He also made up nick names for pretty much everyone he knew. He'll be dearly missed by all who loved him. A big thank you to Dr. Wong and staff at CancerCare Manitoba and to the incredibly caring staff at the Palliative Care E Wing of Riverview Health Centre. • Ed was a gentleman through and through. Liked and respected among his Police friends. He didn't need his Staff Sergeant stripes to get the members to do things they just did them so as not to let him down. A true leader. He had a quiet sense of humor and laughed at himself the most. Great guy! - Posted by: Gary Walker (Friend and colleague) on: Apr 08, 2017
