Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJANETTE VICTORIA STEPHENSON (nee LEOCHKO) It is with deep sadness we share the sudden passing of Janette Victoria Stephenson (nee Leochko). Janette is survived by her two sons, Matt (Erika) and Jared; their father Larry; her sister Doreen (Jerry MacLean), and niece Melanie (Brian) and their sons, Adam and Shane. She was predeceased by her parents Ethel and Peter Leochko, and brother Jim. Born January 15, 1950 in Winnipeg, she attended Bannatyne School, St. Charles School, John Taylor Collegiate and the University of Manitoba. After attaining her Bachelor of Education, and in later years her Post Baccalaureate. She taught in Kenora and then went on to become a resource teacher in St. James-Assiniboia and River East Transcona; finally retiring from Ecole James Nisbet in Seven Oaks School Division. Janette will be remembered for her big heart, infectious laugh and her values of honesty, integrity and hard work. Her strength came from the love of her boys and watching them develop into caring adults. She fostered many close, long lasting friendships and loved her get-togethers at the lake, Camp Waterfall, over a good book or dinner, or just being together. Her love of travel took her to many destinations over the years. After retirement, she enjoyed the rewards of volunteering at Meals on Wheels, CancerCare, and weekly assisting new Canadians with their English. She was honoured with the first Ester Ginpil Spirit award in 2013 from CancerCare. Singing with "Margaret's Choir" was also cherished time. Sadly, she was often challenged due to a long and unrelenting struggle with depression. In the end, she was too weary to continue. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Her spirit will live on in our hearts and memories. May she rest in peace. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow. Her final resting place will be beside her parents in Poplarfield. Interment at a later date. Donations may be made in Janette's memory to Canadian Mental Health CMHA- Manitoba and Winnipeg Division, 930 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 0P8 or CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 0V9. Peacefully sleeping at last The world's weary trouble and trials are past. In silence she suffered, in patience she bore, And is laid to rest to suffer no more. It was with great sadness that my students and I received the news of Janette's passing. Janette was a well loved volunteer at our English school. She was engaged and friendly with everyone she encountered. It was clear that she loved to help Winnipeg's newcomers. She would observe their English skills and happily report on their improvements. She did anything that was required. She helped them engage with technology by showing them how to use iPads. She supported their literacy by reading with them and helping them practice new words. She will be greatly missed by our classroom community. Our deepest condolences to her family. - Posted by: Nicole Wade ((ESL Teacher where Janette volunteered)) on: Apr 30, 2017

I met Janette at Margaret's Choir last season, and as it happens we sat next to each other for the practices we attended. Although I didn't get to know her well we had pleasant conversations and looked for each other every week. She was a lovely person. I sincerely send my sympathy to her family. I'm sure she will be very much missed. - Posted by: Pat Walmsley (Met at Margaret's Choir ) on: Apr 08, 2017

Although Janette was a member of Margaret's Choir's choral family for a short time, she was a very treasured addition to our alto section. It was a special privilege for us to have her with us on stage on December 4 at Jubilee Place to add her voice to our benefit concert. On behalf of everyone in the choir, we extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones. - Posted by: Nancy McAvoy Gajdosik (choral colleague in Margaret's Choir) on: Apr 08, 2017
