EDNA KAREN HODGERT 1953 - 2017 Peacefully in her sleep, and in the arms of her daughter, Karen put down life's burdens. She leaves behind, to remember and to celebrate her life; her daughter Paula Wachs, her son George Wachs, her sisters Janet Figler (Jan) and Frances Yaworski (Sonny), and her brothers Edward (Jocelyn), Frank (Carol), and John Hodgert (Pat), as well as cherished nephews and nieces, beloved friends, and her children's father George Wachs. Karen was predeceased by her parents Frances and Edward Hodgert, her sister Lillian Campbell, her sister-in-law Sharon Hodgert, her niece Charmaine Figler and nephew Adam St. Godard. Karen was born in the Winnipeg neighbourhood of Weston. Except for some years spent on the west coast in later life, she lived in Winnipeg. Karen attended school in St. Vital, a neighbourhood that always held a special place in her heart. Friends and family would often reminisce with Karen about the times spent in Morier Park, and other St. Vital spots of warm memory. After some years in the working world, Karen focused on raising her family, and keeping up with her large and rambunctious extended family. Karen was 'Mom' to many in her life; friends, relatives, neighbours, and strays. Karen's extensive volunteer work included work for schools, hospitals, and seniors, amongst others. Helping young people was her forte. She always made them feel welcome, and loved. Karen suffered from Lupus for a number of years. Not withstanding her physical challenges, she faced her final months with courage, good humour, and dignity. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15 at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 603 Wellington Crescent, to be followed by a gathering at the Royal Canadian Legion, South Osborne Branch, 426 Osborne St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lupus Society of Manitoba Inc., 386 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3R6.

My deepest and heart-filled condolences to Paula, George, Janet and Family. The news came as a shock. My dear Karen was a special girlfriend, my perfect roommate and beach companion. She has been called away by the Angels. I will miss her while holding very precious memories. Some sad, but we had many heart-filled and fabulously fun times with her great spirit and sense of humour and love. Karen enhanced my life and I will miss her dearly.
