GIRNITH R. STEWART (née GEORGE) BFA, B.Ed, MA The family of Girnith Stewart wishes to advise friends and family of her death, Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Misericordia Health Centre. Girnith is survived by her three children; George, Laura Jean and Harriet, their spouses and children, and her sister Eileen George. She will also be remembered by her sister-in-law Gloria Stewart, six nieces and nephews and their families in Winnipeg, British Columbia and Japan. She was predeceased by her loving husband Lawrence in 2005. Girnith was born on May 8, 1927, the first child of Alan and Elsie (née Finnie) George. She would happily reminisce about spending time as a child at her grandparents' farm at "the Hill" and in their retirement Girnith and Lawrence were able to fulfill a dream to build their own home in the Bird's Hill area. The years in between had their share of joy and sorrow, hard work and fun, successes, and learning experiences. Ahead of the curve in many ways, Girnith was at various times an artist, educator and entrepreneur. She completed Normal School and taught for many years and at many grade levels including holding the position of Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba. She worked while attending university, looked after the family while Lawrence worked out of town, started her own business and was successful at buying and renovating rental properties long before it was trendy. In retirement, she and Lawrence travelled, played with the grandchildren, supported the Toronto Blue Jays and enjoyed their country home, and later their Osborne Village condo. Girnith moved into the Parkway retirement community and enjoyed meeting new friends and reconnecting with some old friends. The family would like to express thanks to the staff at the Misericordia Health Centre for their care of Girnith during the last few months. Cremation has taken place. A graveside interment will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery. Reception to follow at Kildonan Community Church, 2373 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Girnith's memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Stewart Family Scholarship Fund (PACE) ? the UW Foundation.
