I worked for Dr. Chochinov in the surgical research lab at the U. of M. many years ago He was appreciated for his excellent surgical technique and his concern for his "patients" condition and well being as well as his attitude towards staff. We went well beyond the call of duty in carrying out his projects because of the man he was. It was not unusual for him to take our group for dinner after a long overtime session on his behalf. On a humorous note one of his "experiments" which had received double kidney transplants became our family pet who survived to a ripe old age of about sixteen. I am not certain if Dr. Chochinov ever knew I had "rescued" him from the lab kennels but had he would have enjoyed a hearty laugh. I will remember Dr. Chochinov with fondness and affection. - Posted by: Gerry McDonald (friend) on: Apr 25, 2017

Harvey was my Grade 4 student in R F Morrison School in the 1960's. What a quiet studious little boy he was. A few years ago I stopped in at Cancer Care to have a visit with him. He remembered me --so lovely. Sincere condolences------a productive life gone much too soon. - Posted by: Joan Main(Wilson) (grade 4 teacher) on: Apr 21, 2017

I will never forget 1st time I met Dr. Chochinov, about 50 yrs ago as an early med student he was assisting pathologists in performing an autopsy on one of his patients. He was curious as to what happened & led to patient's demise. As I proceeded through med school and surgical residency I found this was unique; It was rare for a surgeon to be so interested in what happened that they performed or attended the patient's autopsy. Dr. Chochinov taught us that finding out what happened to a patient was the ultimate teaching/learning experience. Later I rotated with him on several occasions & while he was tough and demanding, there was an underlying sweetness and concern for his residents as well as for his patients. When faced with a major trauma he was beside us and able to get the patient (and us) out of trouble. Super surgeon technically and incredibly conscientious and caring. Over the years since working with him I have often thought of him and wondered how he was doing; I have missed my contact with him. He cared for the residents as well as his patients and taught us a lot about being a good physician and surgeon. Throughout my residency I often sought his opinion and advice. He had our respect as a surgeon, teacher, and a caring person. I loved working with him and cherished our relationship. I know he will be missed by his patients as well as his loving family. Sincere condolences. - Posted by: Arnold Zeal, MD (Former surgical resident) on: Apr 17, 2017

My sincere condolences to the family. Dr Chochinov was an exceptional doctor. My mother from Virden came to HSC for surgery and Dr Chochinov was her surgeon. He was such a kind man!! He took such good care of her for years but also of us. We kept him in steady supply of peppermints. You are in our thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Karen Naumiuk (Patient's daughter ) on: Apr 15, 2017
