DORIS SILVER The family of Doris Silver is greatly saddened to announce her passing on April 13, 2017 in Kelowna, BC. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Joe, and all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Murray Gitlin) and her son, Brian (Lorna), as well as three grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew and Marnie, and one great-grandchild, Aura. Doris was born in Springfield, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg at the age of 18. In 1945, she married Joe Silver with whom she had been a pen pal during the Second World War. They spent 59 wonderful years together. Doris was very active in the Jewish community, raising funds to help unfortunate children in the State of Israel. She was a member of the Pioneer Women's Organization (Na'amat) for 46 years, serving as National President for 15 years. In addition, she was the Campaign Chairperson for the Pioneer Women's Child Rescue Dinner for many years. She was also very active in raising funds for the Winnipeg community at large. Doris also worked in the private sector managing retail outlets for Ricki's, Marie Claire and Pennington's. Doris travelled extensively with her husband and especially enjoyed the many cruises they took and winter months spent in Hawaii and Palm Springs. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregation Etz Chayim Synagogue, 123 Matheson Ave., Winnipeg. Interment will take place at the Rosh Pina Memorial Park, 2795 Main Street, Winnipeg. For those who wish, donations in Doris' memory can be made to the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University, or to the Jewish National Fund (JNF).
