SONJA ROSETTE MATTHIES On April 12, 2017 our beautiful, tender hearted Sonja Rosette Matthies left this world to live with her heavenly father. Sonja was born August 10, 1972 in Bowmanville, ON to Rita Smyth (Matthies). Sonja was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, a nephew, and only three months ago by her beloved fur baby, Bob. Sonja leaves to mourn her passing her mother and stepfather, Rita and Errol Smyth, her stepbrother and sister Kenny and Sandra, Aunt Rosella Kuhl (John and family), Aunt Sophie Zielke (and family), Aunt Gerta (David and family), and her best friend Colleen Tiel (Glen and family). Sonja was an only child but the families of her aunts and best friend always made room at the dining table for her. She was our cousin and our friend and lines between both were blurred, we all loved her as our little sister so very much. Sonja was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer in 2012 and she had fought a hard battle and had been ever so brave throughout. Sonja had a profound belief in prayer and was very grateful to all who prayed for her during this time. She put her faith in God, her heavenly father, that he would give her enough strength for each day. She never lost hope for complete restoration. Sonja was an intrepid traveller and had visited Nairobi, Europe, Mexico, Newfoundland, Nunavut, Aruba, Nova Scotia, walked the Camino circuit through Spain and Portugal, once with her mom and then on her own. She still had a long list of places she wanted to travel and experience. Sonja's last trip was two weeks before her passing. She spent a week in Baja, Mexico with her mom and Errol. During this trip Sonja savoured every moment, every sunrise, every beach walk, and time with Mom. Rita will be forever grateful for all 44 years but especially this last gift of time. God's timing is always perfect. The family expresses deep gratitude to Dr. Banerji ("my awesome doctor") and the entire cancer team at the St. Boniface Hospital. Sonja genuinely liked you all and appreciated the excellent treatment she received. Your bedside manner and sense of humour were not lost on her. Sonja was also thankful to all of her friends and family who gave her support and encouragement. She felt so loved and blessed to have you all in her life. A memorial service has been set for 3:00 p.m., April 22, 2017 at the Nor Villa Hotel banquet room, 1763 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sonja's honour to CancerCare Manitoba for Research on Sarcoma by Dr. S. Banerji.

A million times I've needed you, a million times I've cried, If love alone could have saved you you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you will hold a place, no one else can ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn't go alone Part of me went with you The day God called you home... I was so Blessed to have had Sonja as my best friend. I will forever cherish every single moment we had together.
