Onie grew up on 5th Avenue in St. Vital where she met her life-long friends in grade one. They spent their youth and young adulthood together eventually graduating from Glenlawn Collegiate. They continued their friendship throughout their lives and saw each other on a regular basis until Onie's passing. Former wife of the late Jim Emslie, Onie spent most of her married life in Southdale raising their three children, Gregg, Sheila and Jill. Many fond memories were made at their cabin in Lac Du Bonnet where they spent many summers. Onie worked for Eatons and enjoyed many years as a sales clerk. She always had a great love of animals throughout her life and enjoyed the companionship of many dogs over the years. She was a long time member of the Gateway Dog Club and a supporter of the Humane Society of Winnipeg. As per her request no funeral will be held. Cremation has taken place. Her ashes will be interred with her parents at Brookside Cemetery. The interment will take place this summer in a private ceremony. A Celebration of Life will take place after, and an announcement will be published when a date and venue have been determined. The family wishes to express their full appreciation and thanks to the staff of 4E at Riverview Hospital and to the staff of 5B at St. Boniface Hospital. Their care and support over the past few months has been exceptional. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Winnipeg Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I have very fond memories of sleep overs at your home Sheila. Your mom was always so welcoming and kind. The puppies are such a part of those sleepover and of course 4 to 5 alarms every morning to get us up for school lol. I hope to contact you as there is a class reunion this fall. I would love to see you. Xo - Posted by: Lynne Salamon /haid (Friend of Sheila) on: May 16, 2025

  • So many of my best childhood memories are with The Emslies. Homefree was the lightpost on their yard so all the kids from watercress hung out there. Onie was a great mom and a great "second mom" to me. I have tried to copy her chocolate chip cookies but hers were the best. To me Onie's house and cottage were 2 of my favourite places to be. Onie always made me feel welcome and like part of the family. She was a warm, caring loving soul. Condolences to Sheila, Jill and Gregg and their families. I will always remember Onie and her love of life, love of her family And her fondness for dogs. Audrey Barnabe (Pineau) - Posted by: Audrey Barnabe (Pineau) (Friend of the family) on: Apr 22, 2017
