DR. HARVEY CHOCHINOV Dr. Harvey Chochinov passed away peacefully at the Simkin Centre in Winnipeg on April 10, 2017, at the age of 89. Harvey was predeceased by his loving wife Loretta (Lee), his mother and father, Alex and Rose, and his brothers, Jack, Ben and Moishe. He will be remembered with love by his brother Davey; sons Zev (Sharon), and Yale (Marjorie); daughter Alix (Barry); grandchildren, Korri (Robert), Adam (Ami), Jordon, Tyler and Elan; great-grandchildren Yael Marley, Jesse Rey, Ben, and Lauren; many nieces and nephews, and extended family members. His wife Loretta was born in Calgary on March 17, 1928 and moved to Winnipeg in 1942. In June of 1949 Harvey married Lee, his high school sweetheart and after both had graduated from the University of Manitoba, they moved to set up a medical practice in Neepawa. Doc Chochinov started his career as a country doctor but soon realized his love of doing simple surgeries. As his diversity and skill increased, so did his reputation and people from surrounding communities began to seek him out. Further study in formal surgical training followed in Winnipeg and in the U.S. at C.H.O.P. under C. Everett Koop, who later became Surgeon General of the United States. Upon returning to Canada, he worked on vascular and kidney transplants in the animal lab. He also won a fellowship to study surgery in London, England for a year. His medical practice in general and pediatric surgery in Winnipeg spanned over 40 years and he was greatly respected, not only for his skill as a surgeon, but for his kind, compassionate and professional patient care. His bedside manner was appreciated by his patients (as was his quirky sense of humour and wit). He is remembered by countless people, many of whom owe Harvey their lives. His friends and colleagues will also remember him for his long and esteemed career as a surgeon in the Manitoba medical community. He was an exceptional surgeon and a demanding teacher at the Winnipeg General Hospital, which later amalgamated with surrounding schools of training and specialized care facilities into the Health Sciences Centre, where he expected the same rigour, discipline, and work ethic from his students that he demanded from himself. He was extremely devoted to his career in medicine, but unquestionably, he was utterly devoted to his family. His dedication to his family shines through in countless ways, through the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, to the generosity of spirit they display in their life endeavours, and finally to the love they share in honouring his life. Being the two youngest of a family of five boys, Harvey had a special closeness with his younger brother Davey. They had a particularly close bond and experienced many adventures together. Not only was Harvey gifted academically, he was a natural leader, as president of St. John's High School and later in his career, of various committees within the medical profession. He was also a wonderful athlete who was captain of the football team and an outdoor enthusiast spending whatever free time he could of his early medical years embracing the beautiful wilderness of Canada's diverse countryside. He skied its mountains, hunted its forests, fished its lakes and rivers, and spent countless hours on the land travelling by canoe with his children, grandchildren and good friends. Later in life, Harvey and Lee went on numerous trips in Canada and abroad, often with children and/or grand children in tow. He transferred this love of country and adventure with family to his children and grandchildren having spent the best of times in the woods, on the water and beside a campfire under the stars. Special thanks to the many caregivers that served Harvey's needs at various hospitals, The Shaftesbury Retirement Centre and the Simkin Centre. Doc Harvey was very well cared for. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

  • Harvey was one of my best teachers as a surgical intern/resident. He loved patients and was very dedicated to learning and instilling lifelong learning into us. I enjoyed working with him as he made us cross our t's and dot our i's trying to achieve perfection. As well, at Seven Oaks Hospital he continued learning taking up laparoscopy as he loved learning. It was excellent and a joy working with him as a colleague also. It was kind of him to ask about me when my student-nurse son was looking after him at Simkin......DR J - Posted by: Dr M Jason (student & colleague) on: Jun 17, 2017

  • Condolences to Chochinov family. I will never forget 1st time I met Dr. Chochinov, about 50 yrs ago when I was an early med student he was assisting pathologists performing an autopsy on one of his patients. He was curious as to what happened & led to patient's demise. As I proceeded through med school and surgical residency I found this was unique; It was rare for a surgeon or any physician to be so interested in what happened that they performed or attended the patient's autopsy. Dr. Chochinov taught us that finding out what happened to a patient was the ultimate teaching/learning experience. Later I rotated with him on several occasions & while he was tough and demanding, there was an underlying sweetness and concern for his residents as well as for his patients. When faced with a major trauma he was always beside us and able to get the patient (and us) out of trouble. Super surgeon technically and incredibly conscientious and caring. He took care of children, adults, and also did vascular surgery, extremely competent at everything. Over the years since working with him I have often thought of him and wondered how he was doing; I miss my contact with him. He cared for the residents as well as his patients and taught us a lot about being a good physician as well as a surgeon. Throughout my residency I often sought his opinion and advice. He had our respect as a surgeon, teacher, and a caring person. I loved working with him and cherished our relationship. I know he will be missed by his patients as well as his loving family. - Posted by: Arnold Zeal, MD (Former resident) on: Apr 25, 2017

  • To the Chochinov Family: My most sincere condolences & with fondest memories of his exemplary/profound care and compassion. My tribute can only be measured in terms of ultimate respect, admiration and amazing expertise. I was not fortunate, nor committed enough to pursue the profession, or perform as a worthy student, as his benchmark is/was a dedication beyond my aspirations. With much respect, R.I.P. - Posted by: Susan Ivanhoe/Miller (Patient) on: Apr 25, 2017

  • Dr. Chochinov was a huge presence in my family, having treated three generations. He was my mom's doctor back in those early days in Neepawa and in fact brought both me and my sister into the world. My Mom loved his wife's name Lee so much that she gave me that name as my middle name. He saved my mothers life on several occasions as she fought her life long battle with cancer. He gave her and us so much confidence during those hard times as we all knew that she was in the very best of hands with Harvey as her doctor. I have never met another doctor who has had the skill and heart that he had. My deepest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Glenda McLarty (Patient ) on: Apr 25, 2017
