ROBERT (BOB) JOHN MITCHELL June 7, 1944 - April 23, 2017 After a valiant fight with cancer, Bob has gone on to his heavenly reward. He is survived by his beloved wife Carolyn (nee Knelson), his children Charlene (fiancé Peter Harbottle) of Burlington, ON, Greg (Susan) of Thunder Bay, ON, and two grandsons: Cameron and Alex. Also surviving are his mother Rebecca, his brother Dave (Betty), and family; and sisters Jean Hall (Don) and family, and Elizabeth Nash (Greg) and family. He was predeceased by his father Robert Mitchell in 2011, as well as his grandparents. Bob arrived in Winnipeg with his family, from Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1958. Bob's 28-year career with TransCanada PipeLines took him across the country from Falcon Lake, MB, and in Ontario to Kenora, Upsala, Ignace, and Thunder Bay. Some long lasting friendships were made as a result of these many transfers. Closer to retirement he had a transfer to Winnipeg as Regional Manager, which was home to most of his relatives. After living in smaller communities, it seemed natural in retirement to enjoy a cottage on the lake in St. Malo, MB. Bob truly loved spending time there and found it to be his refuge. Bob and Carolyn joined a volunteer group called RVICS (Roving Volunteers in Christ's Service). They roamed the USA to assigned locations in their RV, doing any needed repairs on buildings and property for needy organizations - again making some lasting friendships. Bob had many varied interests. In addition to his love of fishing, the cottage and RV'ing, Bob was an avid Ham Radio operator. He also loved wood-working and wood-working magazines, along with gospel music. Their church families along the way were also a vital and meaningful part of their lives. Thank you to family and dear friends for your loving support and pastoral visits. You are all special. Thank you also to the Palliative Team at St. Boniface Hospital for your loving care over the past weeks. You truly are a caring team. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to our home church: Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church for ADC (kid's camp), 500 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R2J 4G1, or The Gideon's, PO Box 3619 Stn. Main, Guelph, ON N1H 9Z9. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church, 500 Lagimodiere Blvd., with reception to follow. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • After a life-long special friendship since 1980 which began in Thunder Bay then Winnipeg etc. we have shared many great times and sleep-overs together these past 37 years of continuous friendship. I remember calling you rather late in the evening. Our Wpg. time was 10:00 pm, thinking it was only 9:00 pm in Upsala. However your time was one hour the other way! When Bob answered the phone still half asleep I asked, "so what do people do in Upsala at 9:00 pm on a Saturday night?" Bob's answer was rather gruff and indignant as he responded," I don't know about 9:00 pm but at eleven at night we sleep!". He then hung up. I remember your faithful monthly support of us as we served as missionaries in Port Colbourn under Operation Mobilization. There were some months where all we had to live on was just that faithful support. I recall spending the night with you folks in Ignace, and just talking Bob's ear off about scripture and nothing but scripture, right after my becoming Born Again in 1990. I also remember when we visited you in T.Bay from Wpg. and going for lunch at Boston Pizza. Then offering to give Bob a farewell hug as we left the restaurant. I recall that was a big mistake and I was quickly shrugged off with a low grunt, "not here Henry!". We always felt so much more than "just friends" in the way you both welcomed us and knocked yourselves out just to make us feel welcome and comfortable each time we got together. You were and still are truly living your lives reflecting Jesus in the flesh. We loved you both and even now Carolyn, we continue to hold you up in our constant prayers. May God hold you close to His heart and give you peace! Henry & Carol - Posted by: Henry Janzen and ( the late Marg Janzen ) now Carol Janzen (Special FRIENDS) on: May 11, 2017

  • Sincere heartfelt condolences to Carolyn and family. Bob gave both Brian and I opportunities that have truly shaped our lives and was supportive to us both along the way. Even after his retirement he was often thought of during conversation, reminiscing about working for him and we always enjoyed getting our yearly card with the family updates. He was truly a terrific person. Love Michelle and Brian Caren xo - Posted by: Michelle and Brian Caren () on: Apr 25, 2017
